I also like that building. As someone on this forum once said, it can look sort of bland and blocky from a distance but it looks more and more impressive the closer you get. In certain light conditions it can be really stunning.

Ha ! Just wishful thinking
can't say i disagree. Could never understand why the city allowed the dark brown facade among a very pastel, light colored city and skyline. The City from the GGB or Marin absolutely glistens and then the big brown thing in the middle , ugh

It's smaller and so doesn't stand out so much on the skyline, but have you seen the LinkedIn HQ at 222 Second St? It looks like a black mausoleum. The BofA is a beacon of pastel by comparison. Anyway, dark colors aparently don't deter the Planning Dept.

We argued about it a lot when the 222 Second Street thread was open. I don't care for the massing, lines, and color of this shorter tower and think it was a mistake. The lobby and POPOS is very well done though.

As I've stated numerous times since being a forum member, I like 555 California's interesting facade with its expensive Carnelian granite that develops a wonderful sheen at various times of the year. It's a famous, well done tower for its day.

"A glassy, translucent stone, Carnelian is an orange-colored variety of Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. Its color varies from pale pinkish-orange to a deep rusty brown, though it is most known for its brilliant orange and red-orange crystals. Its name comes from a Latin word meaning 'flesh.'"

So think of it as a huge stack of meat.

Oh God... Now every time I see 555 California I'm gonna be thinking 779 foot tall Porterhouse Steak (or T-Bone). Something thick. Cuz a filet mignon, it is not. Anyway.... Salesforce, WOW! Picture #3324 is so awesome. And my favorite "short" building in the whole city, 535 Mission Street looking so cool and smooth. Such a cute little high-rise.

Personally I like a dark glass curtainwall. Columbia Center in Seattle is a favorite of mine with its black curtainwall facade.

The LinkedIn building totally overwhelms the much smaller historical buildings along Second Street. Sometimes a juxtaposition like that can be cool, but here it's just too much.

A piece of equipment appeared on the top of the building recently. I am not sure what to call it - a crane?

View from my apartment in the Civic Center with zoom on my camera.

IMHO: too bad 181 Fremont isn't 100-150' taller--as was originally proposed.

Oooooh! pic #3340 Wow! The contrast of the "soft/curvy" Salesforce vs. the sharp angles and vertical lines of the 181 Fremont, against the black sky.... What a duo! True a taller 181 would have been nice but I have noticed that both Chicago and N.Y. and other world class skylines have the same "set up". You have a supertall and there always a "sidekick". The best skylines have that dynamic of a signature tower usually next to it a slightly shorter signature tower. It works. Before, San Francisco only had that dynamic in the movie The Towering Inferno. Remember the Glass tower and next to it the Peerless Tower? Otherwise we are back to a plateau skyline..... ala Montreal, Boston, Miami, Honolulu, San Diego, Vancouver, etc.
