2010 Edmonton municipal elections

Might as well start a thread, especially since things are getting interesting hilarious

Hotellier and pro muni candidate Don Koziak proposes halting LRT construction is favor of highways and interchanges

Koziak calls for halt to Edmonton LRT expansion

Mayoral candidate wants wider roads, more bus lanes

EDMONTON — Don Koziak kicked off his mayoral campaign Thursday by calling for construction of more freeway interchanges and a halt to LRT expansion.

“There is no silver bullet to cure us of our dependency on cars. Expansive LRT is certainly not the cure,” he told a news conference.

“We need clean, safe, well-maintained roads that allow our buses, taxis, cars and trucks to move goods and people, and that is my priority.”

The city is on track to complete a $725-million extension of the LRT from downtown to NAIT by 2014, with most of the money coming from the provincial Green Trip program. City council has also approved lines to the west end and Mill Woods worth a total of about $2 billion, along with routes to St. Albert and through downtown.

But Koziak, part owner of his family’s Chateau Louis Hotel and Conference Centre, said he wants this work stopped if possible because the city can’t afford it. Instead, his transportation priorities are interchanges on Whitemud Drive at 17th Street and on Yellowhead Trail at 66th Street and 149th Street, he said.

“LRT is one of those topics that suburban people really like, not because they will ever use it, but because they feel good about it,” he said. “What we have done is create an impediment to good traffic flow. That money could be spent on interchanges, wider roads and bus lanes.”

Koziak = Fail
I wish i was able to vote in this election, alas I will likely still be living in the burbs, although I'm working towards fixing that.

It's almost as if he doesn't actually want to be mayor, and is running because he lost a bet.

The online comments in the Journal article are pretty hilarious. The vast majority agree that Don is out to lunch.

A sign that Edmontonians are evolving perhaps ?

^ ETA SHOFEAR beat me to it

Here are some quotables:

You're totally right Don, the increased ridership created by the new Southgate and Century Park stations is an illusion. Suburbanites aren't ACTUALLY using the LRT. The City has simply purchased many thousands of animatronic mannequins that they place on the trains and at the stations every day.

That's right Don! Good for you. We don't need to be a sustainable city. Smog never hurt anyone! And who needs increased density, anyway? We can all afford those 8% tax increases every year! Fight on, Don! Stop the city from making smart choices! Stop the LRT and keep that private runway for rich guys open!

I hope Envision Edmonton makes this guy their poster child. That airport will be shutdown in no time!

Hey Don call up your buddy Tooker Gomberg. While you're widening the roads we can flood them in the winter and skate around town.

Nice to see a platform straight from 40 years ago.

Mandel is going to capture 65% of the vote again, boner and koziak are going to split 25%, and the last 10 % are going to go to various crackpot people that run.

Out of curiosity, what are the "requirements" to vote in a municipal election?

I'm a permanent resident of Canada, so I know I'm not able to vote in Federal / Provincial elections (without filling out some extra forms, I believe), but what's the deal with municipal ones?

Mandel would get my vote.

Everything I've read has said he's running again. I'll try to find a link.

Proof of residency in Edmonton, I believe. Government issued ID works pretty swell for proving that and a utility bill, I think. I participated in my first municipal election last election so things may be a bit foggy.

You do have to be a canadian citizen.
