Nothing like a Chicago winter, probably temperature wise has more of a climate like Vancouver, BC, perhaps a little cooler. It doesn't snow all that much which may surprise many, although in recent years it has.
Now, the major difference between NA winters and Scandinavian winters is that they are way more dark and dreary. In the winter months, the lack of daytime light makes it very depressing. Also, it's for the most part very overcast, drizzly, and windy for a good 7-8 months of the year.
That said, in my opinion people exaggerate how bad it is. I'll take a Danish winter any day over a Minnesota winter.
