I haven't been to Orlando since 1977, spending 3 days there, and I can't remember, back then, they even had a downtown skyline, if so, I missed it!

You are not alone. Orlando gets 50 million tourists a year and very few ever set foot in the actual city limits. Most head south out of Orlando International toward the attractions area, whereas downtown Orlando and environs is Northwest of the airport.
