Long Beach is a great town. It has pretty good surf, as you can see.

Surfing World Tour Coming to New York's Long Island With $1 Million Purse

By Erik Matuszewski
Jan 26, 2011

Quote:
Long Beach on New York’s Long Island this year will be the site of the first professional surfing world tour competition on the U.S. East Coast.

The Quiksilver Pro New York is scheduled for Sept. 4-15, with a record $1 million purse. The event is the sixth stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals 2011 World Tour, which starts next month on Australia’s Gold Coast and also features events in Brazil, French Polynesia, France and Hawaii, according to a joint release from the Huntington Beach, California-based tour and Quiksilver Inc.

“When I was young, I remember some great waves on Long Island with my brother Sean and our friends,” Kelly Slater, a 10-time ASP world champion, said in a statement. “This event itself will be unique and kind of an unknown for us. Bringing the ASP tour to New York will be fun.”

Organizers said official forecaster Surfline.com conducted a 15-year wave study that determined the first two weeks of September provides the most consistent time period for sizeable surf in Long Beach, on Nassau County’s south shore.

“The surf climate in western Long Island is greatly affected by the underwater Hudson Canyon offshore, which can turn average surf into very high-quality surf comparable to many of the best spots in the world on the right day,” said Sean Collins, Surfline.com’s president and chief forecaster.

Long Beach to start 2-mile boardwalk rehab

http://www.myfoxny.com/story/22087678/long-beach

Quote:
LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) -- The city of Long Beach is set to begin replacement of its 2-mile long boardwalk destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.

A ground-breaking ceremony will be held Saturday morning.

Long Beach, just east of New York City, was among the worst-hit communities during last October's storm.

The entire length of the wooden boardwalk had to be ripped out, leaving only concrete support beams.

Newsday says the $44 million project is expected to be completed by early November. Some sections will be reopened before that, as soon as they're completed.

Residents and businesses in Long Beach say the boardwalk and beach are vital magnets in drawing visitors to the seaside city.
