Now this is interesting, there is a possible plan to realign Alderney drive at the Portland/Prince Albert intersection, something about Mill Lane.

You left out the words "unnecessarily expensive" in front of civic infrastructure. Now they are going to realign streets for this thing? Why don't we just have a big bonfire fueled with $10 and $20 bills?

Read the article again. They are considering realigning the streets to fix a traffic problem, which opens up the possibility of daylighting part of the waterway.

Never thought I'd read you complaining about fixing a traffic problem!

There is never much traffic there. This smells suspiciously like HRM once again bowing to the EAC and spending millions on one of their pet projects.

Feds and province to spend $6.3 million on Sullivan's Pond sewer renewal. Project to start 12 days before municipal election,
There is also money for projects that have already commenced.

Interesting idea - not sure what the holdup would be. They have been daylighting rivers and streams in the Ottawa/Gatineau area forever. Seems to me that if you examine this through Google maps it would make for an interesting business case around increased eco-tourism (paddling from Bay of Fundy to Halifax), increased property values and increased retail shopping because of increased population numbers. You have to create a business case and far too many people involved in the environmental movement view commerce as evil which is part of the reason these projects never get off the ground, because they tackle them from the wrong perspective.

The upper portions of Sawmill Creek will be daylighted this summer. Phase I starts at Sullivan's Pond and continues downstream to south of the Lock 4 Conominium Building. Due to the narrow easement most of the stream will be housed in a three-sided box culvert.

Some photos of the project were posted by jonovision in the General Updates and News thread:

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...94#post8038594

Just thought I'd post it here to keep the info in one place for those interested in the project.

Personally, I think it looks better than I expected it to be and look forward to checking it out once it's finished, along with the restored inclined plane marine railway:

This is a great thing for Dartmouth!

This is coming together. Won't be long until all that is left is the new plantings in the spring.

It's so nice walking by and hearing the sound of rushing water. I can't wait to walk across the bridge. I'm very happy with how this project turned out.

Given the grade change there, I wonder if the original pre-1971 river was actually a rapids?

It was navigable, so it probably had locks which were then removed.

Talking

It was a marine railway that definitely had some white water.

I don't understand the need for the bridge other than for eye candy. It is literally 10 feet to one side of dry land.

I noticed that too. Pretty but superfluous.

It had to do with lining up the trans canada trail with the existing pedestrian crossing and keeping it relatively navigable for both pedestrians and cyclists.
