Perhaps the 3 blocks between Red River and I35? We know one of those blocks will be the Fairmont. The other 2 may be options... Palm park is on one block - not that it gets used. So at max, 2 blocks. Also, Waller creek runs through these blocks. While challenging, it would be cool to integrate the creek into the the convention center, similar to how the riverwalk enters the mall in SA. I assume the tunnel might allow for this.

I could see all of these hotels triggering a convention center expansion due to demand and size of events. Still like the idea of a pedestrian bridge paired with the rail bridge to an arena space at the AAS site... would be a nice way for the convention center to flex space up considerably - and get more use out of the arena other than concerts, UT bball games and possible MLS.

Red River Street to close for medical school construction

From the University of Texas:

On Saturday, April 12, workers will begin realigning Red River Street for construction of the teaching hospital at the Dell Medical School. The street will be closed from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (MLK) to 15th Street until the end of 2014. Red River is expected to reopen to through traffic in January 2015.

Other roadwork associated with the Dell Medical School will begin March 30 on 15th Street and April 20 on MLK. These streets will remain open, but traffic delays should be expected.

Seton unveils teaching hospital name

Chad Swiatecki
Staff Writer-
Austin Business Journal

Seton Healthcare Family’s new teaching hospital at the University of Texas’ Dell Medical School complex will be known as Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas.

Hospital system officials unveiled the name Thursday ahead of a ceremony Monday to mark the start of construction of the medical school.

Construction on the new $295 million hospital, which will replace University Medical Center Brackenridge, is slated to begin later this year with an opening slated for 2017.

Crazy how this area can easily be overlooked with the rest of construction happening downtown, but this is pretty major. From that video its going to make Downtown Austin look so much bigger.

Yeah, Lots of crazy changes coming to this area soon.

I recently was riding my bike in the area trying to imagine how it would look like in the future. I noticed most of the trees in the area had either a red dot or green dot spray painted on them. I assumed Green dot was for trees to be relocated and red for permanent removal. Most of the red dot trees did not look so good. Some of the green dot trees are huge heritage oaks.

I found this...UT has a good success rate relocating trees, "During the past 15 years, UT Austin has transplanted 46 trees with a 93% survival rate." There is more details about the trees to be moved for the medical school at bottom of this link.

Officials mark start of construction of UT’s Dell Medical School

By Ralph K.M. Haurwitz
American-Statesman Staff

The ceremony, with remarks by a series of dignitaries, was held beneath a large white tent at 15th and Red River streets, where the education and administration building will rise. A nearby medical office building, research building and garage also will be constructed as part of the $334 million project.

Ground is expected to be broken this fall on the UT campus for a $295 million teaching hospital, which will be owned and operated by the Seton Healthcare Family.

I know this is just the first phase and only the beginning of the medical school but it still seems smaller than I was expecting. Also would like to see a little more height as well. I really like the layout of the buildings on both sides of Waller Creek though.

I still haven't been able to find the heights on these (site plans), so if anyone sees them please let me know.

At least they list the crane heights, 253 feet, (two) 214 foot cranes and one 169 foot crane.

Texas AD Steve Patterson: Taxpayers should help finance new arena

By Brian Davis

Texas athletic director Steve Patterson said the school is “probably six to eight years” away from building a new basketball arena to replace the Erwin Center.

UT’s new Dell Medical School will eventually need the land the Erwin Center is situated on. School officials have yet to determine where a new arena fits into the campus master plan, though.

During a speaking engagement Monday night sponsored by Texas Monthly, Patterson reiterated his belief the city of Austin should shoulder some construction costs. Patterson has previously told the American-Statesman a new arena could cost a $500 million or more.

So at some point previously Patterson jumped that to 500M, but the statesman never reported it then?

It's possible that a design has been selected behind the scenes in which case a general idea of the cost can be summarized early on.

It's unlikely the taxpayers will want to pitch in however I think its a good idea. It would be totally outrageous for a city as large as Austin to have no sizable arena for major events. It would need to be larger than the Erwin Center with a higher capacity. This is something city leaders have brought up.

I was planning on walking around the site to snap a few more, but went out of my way to help out a student who recently moved here. Glad to assist others when they need it.
