The leaders, unlike the past few years, were grouped much of the race with the rest of the pack not far behind. It was incredibly tight relatively speaking.

EDMONTON - The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series is returning for the 2012 Edmonton Indy.

“The good news is that Canada’s best stock car drivers will once again have the opportunity to enter an exciting race in Edmonton, and discover our new race course,” said Francois Dumontier, CEO of Edmonton Indy promoter Octane Motorsports Events.

The NASCAR event skipped Edmonton in 2011 but was popular with racing fans from 2007 to 2010.

The Star MAZDA Championship, a “Road to Indy” open-wheel ladder series, will also be part of the July 20-22 Edmonton Indy.

Viewership, attendance up in 2011 season By indycar.com staff

For the second consecutive year, the IZOD IndyCar Series saw an increase in television viewership and attendance.

The 2011 season averaged 402,000 viewers per race on VERSUS -- up 10 percent over the 2010 average of 365,000 viewers – while ABC saw a 28 percent increase in viewership, averaging more than 3 million viewers.

Overall, the series saw a viewership gain of 28 percent, reaching more than 18.2 million homes --- an average of 1.4 million households per event.

VERSUS, which will be re-branded NBC Sports Network in January, had four of its most-watched races -- Edmonton, Baltimore, Texas and Toronto -- with the July 24 Edmonton Indy topping the list with almost 650,000 viewers.

The 100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500 on ABC was the most-watched race of the year with 6.711 million viewers -- a 16 percent increase over the 2010 race.

Highlighted by attendance growth at the events at St. Petersburg, Toronto, Twin Ring Motegi and the new event at Baltimore, overall attendance numbers for the 17-event schedule also saw an increase of 22 percent in 2011.

“INDYCAR had one of its strongest years in growth on TV and in live audience in 15 years on the last year of our current car,” INDYCAR CEO Randy Bernard said. “We believe that the new car along with Honda, Chevy and Lotus coming into the IZOD INDYCAR Series will help the sport show positive momentum for 2012.”

Huge. I think that could give us a few extra advertising bucks for next year.

EDMONTON - Celebrations are planned around the Edmonton Indy with the hope the city will rally behind the sporting event.

At a press conference Thursday morning, Race Week Edmonton announced its intentions to build excitement “outside the race track fence,” starting on June 14 right through the Indy weekend, ending July 22.

The volunteer group, which has been working to build up the profile of the Edmonton Indy the past three years, is partnering with Taste of Edmonton to offer live musical entertainment as well as family friendly activities, car shows and plenty of wining and dining during the month-long festivities.

Edmonton connections: Rahal's journey begins
By Dave Lewandowski
Published: Jul 17, 2012 @ 7:15 AM

In May 1975, Bobby Rahal made what, in his mind, was an easy decision.

So, with the blessing of his parents, Robert Woodward Rahal bypassed graduation ceremonies at Dennison University in Granville, Ohio, on May 25 to make his Player’s Canadian Formula Atlantic Series debut in far-flung Edmonton, Alberta.

The decision to participate in the race weekend at Edmonton International Speedway was sealed by his Formula Atlantic foray in the autumn of 1974 at Watkins Glen, where $500 from Jim Trueman and a 1972 BMW led him to victory.

“My graduation day was the same day as the race so I kind of viewed that my graduation day was celebrating the past and the race was celebrating the future,” said Rahal, a history major. “I have to say my parents didn’t argue with that, which I thought was a pleasant surprise.”
