Better late than never right? What was supposed to be a “Dec 1, 2012″ groundbreaking for Vancouver-based Onni Group’s 32-story apartment tower at 9th and Olive has been delayed until now, almost two months later. A reader sends in this photo from today that shows construction activity has now finally begun in earnest for the 888 Olive tower. Fencing has been put up around the perimeter and construction equipment and crews were spotted on site performing pre-construction work.

The new tower when completed will have 283 units for rent (potentially more than 400 new residents added to the downtown population) and a whopping 11,000 square feet of commercial retail space on the ground floor that could help activate the intersection substantially, while also helping to connect the southern part of the Historic Core to South Park and the Financial District.

If construction continues forward as projected, 888 Olive will be completed in late 2015/early 2016.

I was in LA, last week, and this should be prominent, on the skyline, given the location.

This project has such a God-awful design. It looks like something that would've been built in Vancouver in the late 90's/early 00's.

Admittedly, I am not an architect and here in DC, all developers seem to build are the same 6-10 floor retro-brick buildings but this building here looks respectable enough-- it certainly isn't a turd.

This looks like it has ground-floor retail. It will allow more people to live downtown, adding vibrancy, and it will allow more people to live near transit. This is also creating construction jobs when they are still needed and this will expand LA's tax base.

It looks fine, more Miami to me than Vancouver. It will add good density and people to DTLA. I think the material choices will make a big difference so lets wait and see.

Ironically the company developing 888 Olive is from Vancouver... so maybe the Vancouver comparisons are not so far off?

Last week brought news that that developer, the Vancouverite Onni Group, broke ground on a 32-story residential/retail tower in South Park, and today the LA Times reports that they've got two more like it up its sleeve. The Onni Group is looking to build two additional towers, one next door to 888 Olive and a second at Twelfth and Flower, near the Staples Center. Onni owns the land it plans to develop, but the projects are only in their infancy--no architects have been hired yet. The company also bought the Union Lofts apartment building on Eighth Street near Hill, which it has no plans to redevelop. But Onni isn't the only Vancouverish game in town--Bastion Development Corp. is doing its best to make the western end of Washington Boulevard in Culver City happen, with three new residential buildings there.

Taken today. Not exactly sure what's going on, but it looks like they laid down a layer of gravel towards the Olive street side and have covered it with a tarp?

there are a lot of older buildings in this area, so while the design would be generic for Vancouver it will be a nice contrast in LA
