I wish they would hurry up with the offsite Car rental/parking complex. I'm loving whats going on at LAX but the center loop area around the Theme building (for future plans) is getting ridiculously cluttered for no reason. The parking garages need to go. The roadways that allow people to continuously loop around need to go. Looking at the "Future plans", the center looks like a cluttered mess.

In other news. The news this morning broke that apparently LAX won a battle against some Nimbys around the airport for all of their future plans. Apparently Nimbys were holding up some of the progress but the Judge squashed it all since, obviously, LAX has been there longer than any of us have been on this earth. Moving next to the airport, you should already know what to expect. Don't like it, DONT MOVE NEXT TO THE AIRPORT!.

Apparently, the design concept has changed.

The concept in the pictures above was influenced by elements of Bradley West. (It was rather reductive.)

At the behest of preservation groups that expressed concern with the way the elements of the APM obscured the Theme Building, SOM was asked to reevaluate the design concept.

SOM sourced ideas from the 60's design for the airport. The roof of the APM stations no longer consists of half-shells reminiscent of Bradley West. Now, the roofs are floating planes reminiscent of the mid-century modern style of the 60's terminals. I think this is a major improvement.

You can find the new APM Design Guidelines in the agenda for the August 4 Board Meeting.

Actually, the city has decided on a settlement agreement with the group. As part of the settlement, the city has agreed to put the plan to move the north runway 260 feet north on indefinite hold. In exchange, the restriction on the number of passenger gates has been lifted and the airport will also be required to install new airfield lighting safety features. Also, the area north of the airport will become new park and recreational areas along with other neighborhood uses.

You can read about the settlement in this article by the daily breeze:

You can also check out the plans for the area north of the airport here:

Another rendering (albeit not so revealing) of Delta's relocation program. I would guess that this is a post-security connector between T2 and T3. I hope they stick with the sterile, minimalist aesthetic.

Westfield finished and opened the terminal 6 renovation under budget and ahead of schedule.

LAWA announced on Twitter the implementation of mode separation for the horseshoe roadway effective 1/23/2017

Not much details yet but it does say hotel, rental car, and LAX shuttles will all use a single level for loading and unloading.

The first part of the Delta terminal shuffle began today with AA and DL swapping 4 gates - AA going from T6 to T5 while DL moves from T5 to T6.

The Midfield Satellite Concourse quietly broke ground today, the first phase of which will have a total of 12 gates; the second phase would add an additional 7 gates.

Although an improvement from Bradley West, it's still an architectural yawner and yet another missed opportunity as far as I'm concerned. Sigh.

American inks deal for $1.6bn investment at LAX

...

American Airlines and the operator of Los Angeles International airport have agreed to a $1.6 billion investment to improve the carrier's facilities.

The scope includes a new unified check-in area for terminals 4 and 5, a connection to the airport's planned automated people mover with a new central security checkpoint on the same level, and landside and airside connections between the terminals, American and LAX operator Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) say in a joint statement.

The investments, which must be approved by the LAWA board, will occur over 15 years with the majority of works complete in seven to 10 years.

...

United Airlines is now the only one of the big three that has not announced multi-billion investment plans for LAX. The Chicago-based carrier operates from 20 gates in terminals 7 and 8 but is in talks with LAWA regarding preferential access to a possible future terminal 9.

“Today, we don’t have the gates and the facilities – yet – to really grow and compete with Delta, American and Southwest,” said Scott Kirby, president of United, on LAX in March. "The most important part of that is actually ensuring that terminal 9 becomes a facility that is dedicated to Star Alliance and United."

A settlement between LAWA and Playa del Rey/Westchester residents was reached last year, the agreement being that LAWA would not move the northernmost runway any farther north in exchange for removing the airport's gate limit. That was more than a fair deal, if you ask me.
