The strange thing is that it appears to have been designed that way from the outset, as that end of the stadium only ever had temporary seating.

It was a bit better before they put in the giant jumbotron wall that blocked off a bunch of existing seats and created a big black void that just made the place feel even more cavernous.

Here's a "before" shot: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jerryr...n/photostream/ ... I'd say it looked better then.

I will now butt out with my stadium design nerdery

Me too, I think it looks better without it.

That shot makes the Big O look tiny inside.

If canada wins the world cup bid don't be surprised if the interior is gutted and reverts back to this except more seating and a lower playing field as they won't have a running track. Perhaps even host the Final.

When the stadium was in Olympic mode it looked so clean and sexy. Look how clean that upper and lower deck works. Not to mention the lack of roof really brighten it up. If they could get a retractable roof and go back to the oval shape the stadium would be a beauty. wow what a difference.

Impressive! Hope you guys can sell out. 40,000 is the minimum attendance at the Big O for a reasonable atmosphere. I was at the stadium last saturday for the Blue Jays game and we were 50k, great ambiance. I can only imagine how exciting it felt in 1976 during the opening ceremony when the stadium was packed.

The last game at Estadio Azteca was far from a sellout, but still the largest crowd ever for a CONCACAF champions league game. I doubt they will fill the stadium for the final but I expect them to break their own record. And I also hope they add temporary seating at the endzone in the Big O so Montreal can approach the record. The two teams are probably going to have their highest attendance ever for a Champions League game in this final. (and ultimately the highest attendance ever for the Impact)

http://www.concacaf.com/article/club...endance-record

Highest attended Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League games:

1. 66,208: Club America 6, Herediano 0 … April 8, 2015 (Estadio Azteca) … semifinals, 2nd leg

2. 55,571: Impact de Montreal 2, Santos 0 … February 23, 2009 (Stade Olympique) … quarterfinals, 1st leg

3. 47,658: Toronto FC 2, LA Galaxy 2 … March 7, 2012 (Rogers Centre) … quarterfinals, 1st leg

4. 40,688: Club America 2, Saprissa 0 … March 4, 2015 (Estadio Azteca) … quarterfinals, 2nd leg

5. 38,104: Impact de Montreal 1, Pachuca 1 … March 3, 2015 (Stade Olympique) … quarterfinals, 2nd leg

6. 33,675: Impact de Montreal 2, Alajuelense 0 … March 18, 2015 (Stade Olympique) … semifinals, 1st leg

7. 33,667: Monterrey 4, Santos 2 … May 1, 2013 (Estadio Tecnologico) … final, 2nd leg

8. 32,810: Tigres 1, Seattle Sounders 0 … March 7, 2013 (Estadio Universitario) … quarterfinals, 1st leg

9. 32,234: Monterrey 1, LA Galaxy 0 … April 10, 2013 (Estadio Tecnologico) … semifinals, 2nd leg

10. 31,650: Tigres 4, Real Esteli 0 … August 1, 2012 (Estadio Universitario) … group stage

Took a look at ticketmaster and if all the grayed out seats have been sold, there appears to only be 5000 or so left. Should be a great atmosphere!

Old news now but Vancouver became the first team in the league to win in Salt Lake. The Whitecaps are also the top team in the league and are pulling away right now.

Game night!!! Should be a good night with hopefully the Habs sweeping the Sens and the Impact doing something good in Mexico City. It doesn't have to be a win but let's score one on their field. It's not going to be easy though.

EDIT: After the 29th no matter what the result is, we can concentrate on the MLS. LOL, we've had I believe 4 games that were postponed due our CCL run. We've only played 4 games this season.

Montreal played well in front of 105,000 crazy Mexicans. Hope they get the result on the second leg.

People keep mentionng it is a 105,000 seats stadium, but there was 80,000 people there last night. A huge crowd nonetheless.

Less than 24 hours!!!

-By far the most important game in Impact history!
-Most important game for the MLS (along with the CCL final from Real Salt Lake in 2011)
-Most important game for the city of Montreal since the Cup in 1993.

MONTREAL – The buzz is strong in this one.

Nearly three months after Montreal Impact president Joey Saputo publicly worried that his club may “make history in a negative way” by drawing measly crowds at CONCACAF Champions League home games, a national attendance record is about to be broken.

The Impact sold 2,000 newly-issued tickets on Monday ahead of Wednesday’s CCL final second leg against Club América at the Olympic Stadium. The 61,004-strong sellout crowd will establish a new record attendance for professional soccer in Canada. The previous record was also set at the Big O, when 60,860 fans saw David Beckham’s LA Galaxy tie the Impact 1-1 on May 12, 2012.

Wednesday evening, Olympic Stadium will play host to one of the most unlikely of sporting events anyone could have dared to imagine, let alone voice. Wildest dreams, unrealistic goals and irrational targets included.

What a football feast they are all in for. The upstart Montreal Impact within feasible distance of pulling off quite likely the grandest shocks since continental club football's very first tournament was invented. According to the purists, that goes all the way back to 1897's Challenge Cup, which was the precursor to UEFA's European Cup won by Real Madrid in 1955.

This game was a big item on the local newscast in Vancouver. I wonder how much press it's getting the States. I'm guessing none. Still a step forward for MLS.
