NEW YORK | Chanin Building | 680 ft / 207 m | 56 FLOORS | 1929
The Chanin Building, 122 East 42nd Street (Sloan & Robertson, 1929; interiors by Chambellan & Delamarre, 1929). Often overlooked because of its proximity to the Chrysler Building, the Chanin nonetheless contains some of the city's most spectacular Art Deco bas-reliefs & grillework.

An Art Deco jewel to be sure. Not too unlike Cincinnati's Carew Tower which is also amazing.

The only unfortunate thing is that this is one of those buildings where security has what can charitably be deemed a certain rectal obstruction when it comes to lobby photography.

another great looking building, and guess what - it's art deco!
btw the thread title says 608ft, i think you meant 680ft.

The buttresses at the top were back-lit at night.
The result was a beautiful crown that seemed to float over Manhattan.

You know what stinks? This gorgeous building, like many others in New York (the most glaring being the Empire State Building), is occupied by ugly, cheapo stores on the first few floors.

That's funny, SONY! I have clients all over town, from Bowling Green to Central Park North. It's often I notice all kinds of sad situations like the Chanin Building.
We can't have it like Park Ave, Madison Ave, or 5th Ave I guess. But darn, it seems some of these girls deserve abetter break!

Some real exciting new buildings on far side of west Village, tho!

had a chance to visit a client at this great building yesterday but alas i could not take any pics....not allowed...but it was pure art deco !!!

Heh - I got thrown out of the Chanin once for that same reason. What harm, really, is there in getting a photo of the gorgeous radiator grilles in the vestibule?
