NY Penn seems to have more serious capacity issue than GCT. Would it be possible for some Amtrak trains running to GCT at non-peak hours?
Not sure how they allocate platforms. Probably based on train length and line usage I would presume.

Penn has issues because they're terminating two busy commuter rail systems in a station that was mostly designed to be a thru station with a significant proportion of less peaky commuter traffic. Also the loss of the head house and old concourse made passenger circulation totally horrible. People can't get on/off trains, down the platform, up to and thru the concourse, and up to street level efficiently which slows down all operations.

PRR only built a pair of North River Tunnels but two pairs of East River Tunnels. Probably a pair for NEC through operations and a pair for LIRR terminal. Other PRR trains terminated at Exchange Place, NJ. The addition of other commuter railroads from NJ to NY Penn Station contrary to original design caused most of congestion today. It is hoped that East Side Access project will relieve NY Penn Station from its current capacity constraint.

Grand Central holds yoga class while Penn Station falls apart

I've been commuting into GCT for several years now and consider myself very fortunate … it's a very special place. Penn is just a nightmare of a place.

MTA Has To Turn Over Penn Station Video for Trip-and-Fall Lawsuit: Judge

The pros and cons of privatizing Penn Station, explained

Quote:
Who can do a better job running New York's cramped, confusing and congested Penn Station? A private company, a consortium between two commuter railroads and Amtrak, or just Amtrak?

The current relationship must change, in which Penn Station's landlord, Amtrak, owned by the federal government, makes major decisions even though it runs fewer trains than tenants NJ Transit and the Long Island Rail Road, experts and public officials said.

"We're stuck with something set up with poor foresight in 1976," said Martin Robins, director emeritus of the Voorhees Transportation Institute at Rutgers University. "We have been living with the results and commuters have been suffering for more than 40 years."

Many elements of the T-REX proposal are derived from earlier regional plans. Please refer to page 196 of Volume 1 of The First Regional Plan for the map of the proposed first step of suburban rapid transit system published in 1929.

The T-REX proposal requires more new infrastructure. The Third Avenue corridor can increase through-running penetration in Manhattan but will be expensive. The Jersey Loop will serve the commuters to Manhattan better but require huge capital expenditure in Manhattan. They can consider connecting the Jersey Loop to the Third Avenue corridor to Brooklyn and the Bronx.

A little late posting this, but the first of the LIRR M9 order arrived recently from Japan for testing. A bit of a punch to the gut aesthetically if I may say so. I think the MTA took a big step backward in quality of design with these clunker front ends. Besides looking like the front end is built from an erector set, the headlights are way too spread out and creates an absolutely artless, awkward and just down right stupid looking look which is especially frustrating considering there is no reason for deviating from what is already an attractive and established headlight/marker light layout on the cab ends of most of the previous M stock. These appear to follow a similar displeasing unimaginative cue that was taken with the MN M8's but without the charming top headlight flourish which I actually kind of like. Who is designing these? It's not hard to design an attractive and modern front end, yet they've figured out how to screw it up and stick us with something for the next 40 years that looks like its already 40 years old running in Argentina or something. Very disappointing. MTA you can do much better!

Obviously if you are reading this and agreeing I think the whole "compare this to what they are getting in _______(fill in the blank country or city)_______" thing can probably go unsaid, as you are well aware of how behind we are with good public design.
