I absolutely love Toronto. Went there back in 2010 (when Virgin America started offering flights from LA) and wanted to check it out for myself. It really was one of my favorite city centers by far outside of New York. It was dense, walkable, urban, sophisticated, and had a lot of the Asian food I enjoy eating, like all you can eat KBBQ for $13.99 at the time! WOW!

Very unlikely, Toronto has been in the midst of a crazy property bubble for the last decade. The punch bowl can't last forever. The fallout is going to be deep, as with every property bubble in history.

A crash or decline has been predicted for years and has yet to happen. Every time a major new condo tower is released, line-ups stretch around the block.

Bay, Adelaide office tower brings work space to condo-heavy downtown

Toronto’s newest office tower is set to bring employment space to a sea of residential buildings.

There are six office buildings currently under development in the city’s core, compared to 12 new high-rise condos, with more than 5,700 units, now under construction.

The $464 million (U.S.) Bay Adelaide Centre East project is expected to break ground in the fall and be completed in 2015 or early 2016, Brookfield Office Properties Inc. said Tuesday.

“Any new office building in the downtown core is welcome. We need more employment space,” said Iain Dobson, researcher and former commercial brokerage executive. “We have built so much residential space, and we haven’t built up a comparable amount of office space.”

Professional services firm Deloitte Canada has signed on as the anchor tenant of the new building, which is the second tower in the Bay Adelaide complex. The new space will bring together employees from five different downtown offices on 17 floors.

The tower comes as a growing number of companies are renewing their commitment, or making a new one, to keep operations in the city’s downtown core.

I like how the offset massing of the tower reflects the similar design element that you see halfway up on each of the condo towers. It evokes the image of shifting glaciers.

43 Gerrard and the Clarion Hotel are great, in that they inject a little bit of color into the sea of blue and green glass towers being build in Toronto. I wonder what the cladding will be on the Clarion Hotel. If it's brick, it could end up quite nice, like the pencil thin tower that went up in NY a couple of years back, which name escapes me at the moment.

i like the new Clarion Hotel, reminds me of 'The Montevideo' in Rotterdam.
maybe the cladding will be similar as well.

Looking at the new 16 york renders I sort of like them, especially considering the original design was a flatout box.
I just hope the midway ledge would be lit up as shown in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th renders.

Oxford Properties Group hasn’t even filled up the tower it’s already building in Toronto’s downtown core but talk is turning to whether the real estate company is planning another giant skyscraper.

The Financial Post has learned that the Toronto-based company gave termination notices this month to tenants at 100 Adelaide West in the financial core — a decision that gives Oxford flexibility if it decides it wants to move ahead with the building.

The proposed 900,000 square foot building has been on and off again since 1998. But with vacancy rates in the 5% range, and the downtown core now teaming with residential towers and workers who have no interest in the suburbs, industry speculation is rife that Oxford is about to pull the trigger.

“Nothing is imminent,” said Blake Hutcheson, chief executive of Oxford, which is a subsidiary of the Ontario Municipal Employee Retirement System. “The short answer is I would love to build it but I don’t know when we will.”

Oxford probably wants to nail down a lead tenant before it goes ahead, although sources indicate OMERS could take about to 150,000 square feet of space in the new building if another firm signs on.

Any move to begin construction, which would take three to four years to complete, would come with Oxford’s RBC WaterPark Place — a 930,000 square foot office development close to the waterfront — only about two-thirds leased.

The risk of not building and providing new space for tenants is that they jump ship to a rival. Brookfield Office Properties has already announced plans to build a second tower at the Bay Adelaide Centre and said professionals services firm Deloitte has signed on to take 43% of the 44-storey 980,000 square foot tower which is set to hit the market in late 2015 or early 2016.

Giant skyscraper? I wouldn't even classify this as large, let alone giant. Shanghai World Financial is giant. This is a midget by comparison. Goes to show you can't trust rumour to be accurate.
