The Future of Downtown Edmonton

2020 vision: What will downtown Edmonton look like at the end of the decade?

Quote:
Over the past several months, we’ve been hearing announcement after announcement for new office, residential and government developments.

Indeed, predictions indicate we could see up to $4.8 billion worth of construction in the city centre by 2020.

It all amounts to an unprecedented amount of construction for Edmonton, says Cory Wosnack, office leasing principal with Avison Young. “When you have billions of dollars of construction value being brought on stream within a five-year period, that’s unheard of, not just in Canada, but in North America,” he says. “Most people … haven’t grasped the significance of it.”

Several projects we know for sure are going ahead: The LRT expansion, the new arena district, the Royal Alberta Museum, expansions at MacEwan University and Norquest College, and various other condo and office towers.

Some other projects remain a bit more unclear: The redevelopment of Rossdale, the major Galleria arts complex, a student residence complex near MacEwan University, and several condo and office towers — including one that promises to be 71 storeys tall.

Well I personally think that due to all this activity Downtown Edmonton will have the biggest change in all the dowtowns of major cities of Canada. Granted in Toronto or Montreal where you already have significant activity downtown its hard to feel any drastic change that this will bring.

By the way Riderfan, welcome to Edmonton. How do you find living in Edmonton thus far?

Does make sense. I understand the pride one takes in ones city but a Canadian themed Thread Title that reflects the many cities across Canada and their downtown areas seems more logical in a national thread and brings in more discussion from across the country.

ie: The Future of your Downtown Area in Cities across Canada.

- Edmonton Resurgence...so on.
- Halifax Example...etc...

Besides that..
Bravo for the resurgence taking place in of Down Town Edmonton, well done. The future looks bright.

Interesting...a thread devoted to a municipal politician in Toronto is allowed to remain on the Canada discussion, and a thread about why everybody loves Montreal is allowed to remain...but not a thread devoted to Edmonton?

Loving it so far. Moved here from Grande Prairie and spent most summers previously in Saskatchewan. Edmonton was always a place I drove through or stayed overnight, but now I'm really starting to appreciate this city and am surprised by its diversity, its vibrance and the revitalizations!
