I dont know who does the chicago diagram page but shouldn't "The Chicago" be taken off and a picture of One Grant Park be added?

SO the parking garage at 145 S Wells which Rozak has on their site now....turns out there's a new construction building permit already pending for the last month or two on it. 20 stories, office. A demolition permit was issued last Thursday for the parking garage...

Totally possible that this thing could start way before anybody thought.

So what? That would be totally fine. It doesn't have to be the same size, by any measure. Stop comparing Chicago and NYC; apples to oranges.

Either they are going on spec or perhaps they've already lined up some tenants?

Spec, a development of this size (204,421 RSF) doesn't require an anchor to get off the ground.

A more notable project that still hasn't signed signed a tenant is 625 W Adams (438,184 RSF). I've heard some rumblings of a few groups that have shown interest but nothing has materialized to my knowledge.

I don't understand why you all keep talking about a park there. If those lots get sold, they are getting sold to someone trying to build some big ass buildings...

The only one I could see being turned into park land within the next 20 years would be the post office based on the reasons already listed by others, and even that seems highly unlikely.

For those of you with access to today's WSJ "Mansions" section, nice story about Chicago's construction cranes. Chicago has the most construction cranes in the country right now.

I think it would be cool to see a full block, public rooftop park in Chicago. Something above a large building 15-20 stories in height, which would justify the land value. It's a shame that Block 37 wasn't designed that way.

That's laughably absurd.

No US city can touch NYC right now when it comes to tower cranes in the skyline.

Um, NYC has roughly 3-4x the number of cranes as Chicago does, at the moment. I'd wager DC has more going on as well, but that is at least debatable.

Here is a link to the article, which is paywalled:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-u-s...nes-1490198406

Most cranes of 12 major metros. My guess is they left out New York. Still, a great showing

Well that makes sense, I'm too cheap to pay for WSJ, so I have no idea what 12 metros the article is referencing.

From my very non scientific observation, of the cities I've spent quite a bit of time in over the last 12 months, outside of NYC (which is on a totally different level of development), I felt DC and Seattle both had about the same amount of cranes as Chicago. SF and LA had noticeably less, though LA is tricky because of the different nodes.
I haven't been to Toronto in a couple years, but have heard they have as much development as NYC currently does, which is insane to think about for a city of it's size.

I'm not so familiar with what this means, but workers have been cutting slits into the brick wall on the south end of the Franklin Building in Printers Row, perhaps prepping some support for the LG proposal on the empty lot next to it?

Interestingly, they're cut all the way to the top of the Franklin, so if it is for the LG proposal, I'm guessing they brought the latest stubby iteration back to the drawing board, since that was only roughly 2/3 the height of the Franklin. They also took it off their website...

Re: The cranes article

It's a weird article.

First, Chicago doesn't lead in total cranes, just in total cranes on residential projects. Seattle leads in total cranes. Second, it does list New York, but with an improbably small number. I can't tell what the caveat is that supports such a small number in New York unless it's only counting downtowns, but even then it seems low for New York.

City. Residential/total cranes
Chicago 31/56
Seattle 23/62
Denver 10/19
Austin 9/20
Honolulu 9/12
San Francisco 9/24
New York 6/21
Boston 2/11
Portland 2/25
Washington 2/27
Phoenix 1/5
Los Angeles 0/29

And LA has zero residential cranes? This is weird for sure.

It's a stupid article.
LA must have 20 highrises over 25 stories u/c in downtown alone. As far as your personal experience-I think by fall or so, you'll see a forest of cranes around Staples Center. It's really going to be something.

Numbers according to Skyscraperpage for U/C high rises right now which isn't necessarily directly correlated to cranes since more than just high rises can use cranes. Anyway:

1. NYC: 141
2T. Chicago: 37
2T. Miami: 37
4. Houston: 22
5. Seattle: 21
6. Austin: 20
7. Los Angeles: 18
8. Denver: 17
9. Dallas: 16
10. Philadelphia: 14
11. Washington DC: 13
12. San Francisco: 12
13. Atlanta: 11
14. Nashville: 9
15. Charlotte: 8
