having family in montreal affords me the opportunity to visit several times a year. i had hoped to do a larger tour of old port and westmount but it was waaaaaay too cold. it was seriously sous zero. anyway, here are a few photos.
let’s start with atwater market. it’s a trendy market near the canal that generally caters to a wealthier clientele.
some great infill/loft conversions around the market and along the canal towards old port.

old port. i always feel like such a tete-carre walking around and taking pictures. it’s such a touristy thing to do.
city hall, ca.1878.
N-D de bonsecours chapel, ca.[late]18th century, though foundations date from 1675.
la maison pierre du calvet, ca. 1725.
marche bonsecours. not really a market anymore but a centre for local artists and the like.
the famous hotel rasco.
the foundations of the walls that used to surround vieux montreal.
metro station nearest old port. off to westmount.
westmount city hall.
the surest signs that you’re in a trendy, affluent neighbourhood.
like i said, it was bitterly cold, so that’s all you get.

I love that you were in Atwater/Lachine. Prolly one of the best hoods in Mtl. I used to rollerblade along the Canal (Lachine) all the time. All the warehouse/loft conversions along the canal make it such an awesome place to see!!
ya, i love montreal. what right-minded person doesn't? my wife harasses me continuously about moving there. there aren't many english teaching jobs, though, so it's unlikely to happen. i'd be very happy living near the market. st. henri has really turned around. actually, there are several boroughs that i'd be happy to live in. when i visit i stay either in DDO [which sucks] or westmount which is...well, everyone knows about westmount.
Well Atwater was the "traditional" English-Speaking Neighbourhood b4 sprawl hit the city and created suburbs like DDO (Dollards-Des-Ormeaux) *shudders*
You could definately find an English Teaching job in the suburbs... but who would want to live there!?! No Thanks. Montreal's suburbs (sadly) as are bad as Toronto's (Pickering, Sauga, etc). Terribly designed (for cars).
But Laval just got 3 Metro Stations... so that's a bonus up there!!!
I'm on your wife's side... altho I'm constantly nagging MYSELF as to why I don't move back!? hahaha
Well I like having those here. Montréal is definately a city Hamilton can look to for ideas/inspiration re: infill development.
Where Toronto is so involved in Highrises, Mtl has been concentrating on making their neighbourhoods pedestrian-friendly.

I see that you didn't follow the usual tourist trail (well, except for the Old Montreal portion). There are lots of nice places to visit oustide of the downtown area, glad to see you discovered Sherbrooke west and the Lachine canal area.
You should re-post this thread in the "City Photos" section, so that more people could enjoy it.
