Giant 'R'-Shaped Observation Tower Planned For Bayside Pier

Wednesday, November 20, 2013
by Sean McCaughan

Quote:
Holy Mother Of Fricken Crap. Challenging, but not quite beating Brickell CityCentre's planned supertall tower for supremacy, mega-mall developer Jeff Berkowitz has submitted plans to the City of Miami for an observation tower called "Skyrise Miami" according to exMiami. (no not this) that would be located on an existing pier behind the Hard Rock Cafe at Bayside Marketplace and would rise to 1,000 feet above sea level. (the FAA has already approved)

The swooping Arquitectonica-designed tower resembles a giant crowbar or the 'R' in 'Rise' and will include three observation decks with what seem to be uninterrupted views of Downtown, Brickell, and Miami Beach. The exposed structure gives the tower a rather industrial aesthetic which might read quite nicely against the Port of Miami backdrop. More imporantly, the entire development would provide a terminus for the Bayfront Park boardwalk and encourage people to activate the entirety of the waterfront. Additional amenities include a restaurant, nightclub, private lounge, ballroom, movie theatre, and some vague amenities/amusement rides only known as "Skyplunge" and "Skyrise Drop."

Whatever your opinion, it's hard to argue with the fact that Miami has been longing for a new landmark building. Could this be it?

WOW!

I like it but I'm not quite sure I like the design. I mean actually do like the design, just not sure if I like it in that location. I'm so confused!

Great project, quite daring....though doesn't this thread belong in general development?

They should build this, although I would argue it should be a little taller. Great project!

It evokes a similar feeling as the observation deck at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin.

Obviously very different material and scale.

well remember anything close to water is going to take on the essence of a more monotone color skyline ,miami's skyline is beckoning fo a developement like this, along with 1 brickell city centre and one bayfront plaza we have a lineup of supertalls coming together.and no its different firms.

The tower in Austin was designed by http://www.mirorivera.com/

I don't think they did both projects.

I'm not a big fan of it. It's unique and out there, and I can see how many would like it, it's just too 'out there' for my own tastes.

Officially the tower would be 990 feet not 1000. The FAA approved it at 1000 feet above sea level (the site is 10 feet above sea level).

Not a big fan as it has a lot of wasted space just to gain height. Why don't they just add a spire then they could say they have a supertall.

Miami Avis Magica Skyscraper by Armarada

December 26, 2013
by Nina Papaioannou

Quote:
Avis Magica by Armarada, a conceptual vertical tower, was built as the tallest building in the area, 335 meters, featuring a new concept called the “vertical nature”.

With an artificial “ecosystem” it will include a museum at the below ground level, dedicated to the city’s wildlife and a 120m tall aquarium water which is pumped and filtered directly from the ocean, an area of islands with tropical vegetation located above the aquarium.

It was part of the competition, held by DawnTown, called for an iconic design for a building in main city, which explains Avis Magica’s rather extraordinary shape.

State’s tallest observation tower advances (via exMiami)
Quote:
But Mr. Berkowitz has been busy. He has already gained the necessary approvals on the height of the tower from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Zoning has also been completed for the huge project.

“We will be presenting the project to the city commission for certain remaining approvals,” Mr. Berkowitz said recently.

“We do not anticipate an issue in receiving phased permits, which will allow the foundation work to commence,” he added.

Mr. Berkowitz plans preparatory work on the site to begin in April, and is planning on a May groundbreaking.

“Interest is very high,” he said. “We view SkyRise as the prettiest girl in the dance.

“We are projecting 3.2 million visitors a year,” he said.

“It’s going to be iconic. It’s going to be the Miami Eiffel tower. We have very significant public support for it,” he said.

This most likely will be Miami's first real signature tower.
