The 2nd layer of the cladding and the spire would take the overall structure to 200 m (656 ft).

Yea, it looks weird at first sight but you get used to it. It's been there since the 70s, people in Lyon call it le crayon (the pencil) and when people nickname a building, it's often the sign that they regard it something friendly so I ended up having respect for it. BTW, see Frankfurt's Messeturm for example, it kinda looks like a more recent taller crayon. I don't think its 70s facade would ever change because it rather fits to the salmon-colored rooves that make the city look warm and it's essential to its original aspect. In fact, it's just clearly too lonely, same problem as that of the tour Montparnasse in central Paris.

I'd rather be concerned about those long bars nearby Incity...

I like the nickname, but I don't like the square-base pyramid on top at all. The long bars aren't as ugly, but they definitely do more damage to pedestrian flow and city form.

No problem with le crayon, to each his own. It's definitely peculiar but since many Lyonnais like it as a cool part of their downtown, then I guess it's fine.

However, although we've seen lots of far worse bar facades, I can't let you say those bars aren't ugly. I mean their volume is insulting, we've been traumatized by that kind of post-war crap over here, all over the country. I don't know yet what's planned right there but simply from seeing them, I can tell they won't last for long in that way they are. They might be heavily restructured or most likely simply demolished.

Note that 154m is only the height of the top floor, the roof is at 170m and 200m tall with the spire.

The first skyscraper in France built New York-style, directly upon the street! I wish Paris had some like that, emerging straight from the streets in the central areas.

Yeah, I'd been a little harsh, underestimating a little bit the actual height. It's their fault! They've been making such a freaking noise of it! The Lyonnais...
Bah, you know I would've done the same for Paris anyway.

Agreed, I think that's merely the 1st highrise fairly tall I see normally aligned to a street wall in the country.

That's downright making French history, folks!

Seriously and quite obviously to us used to awkward layouts onto large post-war slabs, that simple fact is indeed going to make a huge positive difference. I can't tell whether this single one would be enough, but I believe a proper layout is the very main thing to change the perception of highrises to the entire population. Lyon's surely going to really enjoy this one better arranged along a regular street of theirs.
