The skyline looks pretty good but needs a new tallest. That's the only way it will be really satisfying.

Also a highrise south of Maritime Centre would expand the skyline a bit. There's lots of room in the area but not sure about the stupid height restrictions.

The Alexander is under construction and it would have been visible just to the left of the Maritime Centre in that shot.

Because of the ramparts bylaw, developers aren't permitted to build anything much taller than the current buildings downtown.

They're bogus "bylaws" anyway- there are already several older highrises visible from within the main yard of the citadel at various points. What's the point of holding onto an outdated bylaw like that and hampering further growth :\

The two Purdy's towers need to be twice as tall. I wonder if they could be added on to like Maritime Center was?

Here's one from flickr that shows some of the new construction:

I wonder how long it will be before the Maple crane is jacked up to its full height?

In wonder if anything has been proposed for that big vacant lot behind the Westin?

Looks like it's being used for parking.

And has been for years. Most people traveling to a large hotel do not arrive by bicycle.

Yes, which is why I am wondering if there are any plans for it.

There were talks (early proposals, I think) to redevelop part of the "VIA Lands" a few years ago. I'm not sure what became of the talks, but I'd assume this (and/or the other big parking lot by the Cunard Centre) is what they meant?

I find that parking lot less unattractive than most others, I guess because the hotel was always designed to be a landmark building with an empty space there. Originally, this was a garden. It would probably look good if the parking were landscaped a bit better with more trees. Part of the problem with parking lots is that they're generally considered a kind of no-man's-land that ought to be paved over with asphalt and then forgotten about. Imagine what Bayers Lake would look like now if they had planted regular rows of trees when those buildings were built in the 90's. It still wouldn't be great, but it would be much improved.

The lot behind the Vic is a bit worse because that could easily be an extension of the pedestrian-friendly stuff along Morris Street.

The light coloured office building on the left is going to get a reclad soon and will have a similar appearance to the NSP building. I think that would look pretty good from this angle.

Thanks someone123 for that picture, it's truly an amazing angle, one I've never seen before. I love how it captures essentially all of Halifax's most noteworthy buildings, with an added bonus of the town clock and one of the smoke stacks.
