@ montrealman : I have no idea! All I can say is that Vietnam feels way more chinese than Thailand, Laos or Cambodia.

@ Big T : Thanks! Basically i'm going back to SE Asia, will hang around Thailand a bit and for a change I'll go to Myanmar (Burma) so expect some thread about Yangon sometime next summer!

Excellent photo tour! I'd love to hit Saigon some day.

I went there back in 2007/2008 - lots of new buildings since. Those electrical wires in some districts were something else. Also some of the dirtiest looking water I've ever seen in the river! Overall I liked the city though.

I was in Ho Chi Minh City in 2009, and I have a bunch of pictures too. I think I'll post them soon, even though they're probably not quite as comprehensive as these.

The very thin multi floor buildings are fascinating. Some only look like they are 10 feet wide. Is the American embassy where the air lifts occurred still standing?

I hate that building that looks like a coffee maker. I remember when it was proposed I said sure..... when pigs fly. And now there it is, an eyesore on the skyline. I think all these garish buildings are a communist plot to make Saigon ugly while Hanoi gets the tasteful and attractive buildings.
