The NHL is becoming pure moronic.
Why do these teams hand out such asinine contracts like candy?

Today would be a great day to be a mediocre UFA NHL player, you're sure to ca$h in.

lol I had to laugh at TSN ranting about how bad the Wisniewski signing was, huge overpayment. Then...

"Uhh, on the line with us now is James Wisniewski"

Flames officially sign Butler to $1.25m per season.

Dallas signs Adam Pardy to a 2 year $4 million deal. Really~?

Oh, wow. Jagr went from potential Penguin to now a villain in Pittsburgh, signing with the FLYERS of all teams.

Maybe Pens fans were right when they say he's only out for himself

Another big name player (especially a quality Centre) the Leafs missed out on.

http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey...r-9-years?bn=1

Brad Richards goes to the Rangers for $60 million over 9 years

Quote:
As expected, Brad Richards, ex of the Dallas Stars, has chosen to sign with the New York Rangers as an unrestricted free agent. The Leafs, and several other teams, had made elaborate pitches to attract the jewel of this year’s free agent crop.

Richards, as reported by TSN, will earn $60 million over a nine year deal, an average of $6.67 million over nine years. The deal is apparently front loaded with $50 million coming in the first five years.

The American-ization of the Leafs franchise continues... Connolly isn't on the same level as Brad Richards but if healthy, can actually be a decent play making Centre-man. He's injury prone but his stats in recent seasons have averaged out to be about 70 points if/per 82 games played. If he plays an entire season, he can approach point per game playing alongside Kessel.

CONNOLLY AGREES TO TWO-YEAR, $9.5M DEAL WITH MAPLE LEAFS

Nice to have Cole with us (he's probably the biggest Hab killer in the league) even though we did overpay to get him... but we need size and grit and it's exactly what he brings.

Every UFA signed was overpayed except for Richards and Vokoun, two of the most important free agents.

And Richards was a ridiculously long contract for an injury-prone guy (just wait, his concussions are coming in spades). I'd still argue they overpaid for him, but hey, it's NYR *cough* Redden *cough* Gomez *cough* Drury *cough*. I guess Richards at least might try to compete for them.

Expect LA to be KILLER in the next 2-3 seasons. They got some of the best deals of this year's FA joke and built on an already impressive core. I'm shocked at how little attention they seem to be getting.

Good to see Calgary and Winnipeg pretty much stayed out of it, as promised. FA day is turning into a complete joke. I can't remember the last FA signing that had any meaningful impact (at least, commensurate to the salary given).

I have to admit, the Cole signing for Montreal is a good one. Possibly the least overpaid of the big contracts this year (even if still a bit overpaid).

PS: WTF Burke? Desperate to fulfill your UFA promises much?

Gagne - Kopitar - J. Williams
Penner - M. Richards - D. Brown

Kings' top 2 line are going to be pretty strong.

Oh ya, how long do you think Penner stays on that 2nd line? How well did he do for the kings last year? Penner only shows up if Penner knows theres a pay cheque to play for. (ie: near contract renewal time)

Good move by Burke!

http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey...from-predators

It’s official: Leafs acquire Franson, Lombardi from Predators

Quote:
As first reported by the Star, sources confirm the Leafs have acquired 6-foot-5 defenceman Cody Franson and injured centre Matthew Lombardi today from the Nashville Predators for defenceman Brett Lebda and minor-leaguer Robert Slaney.

Franson was a regular on the very strong Nashville blueline last season and will immediately move into the top six on the Leaf defence. Lombardi was concussed last season and the money-concious Predators were so desperate to get rid of his $3.5 million-a-year contract they were willing to move Franson, who is in the final year of his entry level contract at $800,000. The Leafs were able to make the deal because they still had about $14 million worth of salary cap room after signing centre Tim Connolly on Saturday.

What a waste of money! Don't like the idea of veterans on our team. I always envisioned the leafs as the new Blackhawks. Offensive, speedy young guns.
I predict Burke will get fired within the next 2 years if he keeps this up.
I'm contemplating not even following them this year.

I'd like to see the Leafs pursue Byfuglien. He'd be worth 4.5 M imo.

Jay Feaster says the Flames aren't "done" yet. Which is encouraging, because he's actually done nothing except make us slightly worse.

Every team needs veterans. All the young guns in the world won't win a championship without leadership. It's not like last year's Blackhawks had no old guys.

I'm surprised Minnesota was on his list of OK teams.

Wonder if he had Calgary on it

Dear god I hope not. Heatly's prima dona personality is the very last thing the Flames need right now.

Sounds like the flames offered a rediculous sum of money to Richards.

You have to like what the Oilers are doing. Bringing in some solid depth and size for the 3-4 line and D. The pieces are falling into place.

From the sounds of it he had a modified no trade clause where he had 10 teams listed that he would NOT accept a trade to. Obviously Minnesota was not one of them.
