Salt Lake City - Metro Resorts

Metro Salt Lake reaches the billion $ plus mark in it's ski industry

Ski season rakes in $1B - Resort group's chief boasts of 'beyond-spectacular winter'

By Mike Gorrell
The Salt Lake Tribune

Another record-breaking year in attracting visitors to the slopes has made Utah's ski industry a billion-dollar-a-year business for the first time.
Ski Utah said Monday that 4,258,900 skiers and boarders carved turns at the state's 13 resorts this past winter, the fifth consecutive year of record increases, this time up 4.3 percent from last winter's record of nearly 4.1 million.
With that much additional action, Ski Utah calculated the industry contributed $1.04 billion to Utah's economy. That figure includes all money spent by residents and visitors on their skiing and snowboarding ventures, from gear and food to lodging and entertainment. It does not count airfare.
"As much as skiing is a really fun recreational option for people, it's also an important source of revenue for the state," said Jessica Kunzer, spokeswoman for Ski Utah, marketing arm of the state's active resorts and related businesses.
The industry also provides work for 18,000 people, she added.
One aspect of this season's figure particularly pleased Ski Utah President Nathan Rafferty. The 4.3 percent boost in skier visits surpassed the cumulative 2.8 percent increase by other Western ski states - Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, New Mexico and Montana - all of which also had good snow years.
"Nobody out there could say, 'We didn't have the snow you did.' Everyone
was playing on an even field last winter."

That competitiveness also impressed Leigh von der Esch, managing director of the Utah Office of Tourism, which works closely with Ski Utah and the resorts in promoting skiing.
"For us to move our market share forward was outstanding," she said. "Since our competitors had strong snow, too, we're breaking through the clutter on our advertising of the product Utah has to offer."
Prospects of a record year seemed bleak as Thanksgiving came and went without snow, as did the first week of December. But snowstorms came frequently after that, often packing moderate to big punches.
Once the snow finally started coming in abundance, Rafferty said, skier numbers inched up steadily, then jumped in March and April.
"There was absolutely no doubt it was a beyond-spectacular winter in terms of powder days and quality of skiing," he said, praising the ability of resorts to cope with big dumps and provide "a quality experience. People don't realize how much effort it takes, like employees getting to work early to shovel snow and remove all of the hassles."

Park City, especially in the last decade, has emerged as a top-shelf domestic skiing and snowboarding destination, boosted by its Winter Olympic legacy and wide-ranging improvements at Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley Resort and The Canyons.

While I would like to see sandy become more urban. I just think the 30 story tower in Sandy could effect the demand for Class A in SLC a little bit. Obvioulsy DT SLC is still the core and always will be, but it could delay another new tower in SLC. I don't mind the idea of a childrens theater and the HS.

Then of course there is the large theater issue, and if you don't know how I feel about that then you must be new to the thread. Has anyone heard any additional information regarding the progress of the new theater in DT SLC.
Future Mayor, One of the things that I appreciate about the design of these towers is that they represent a step outside of the typical box that we have seen so much of in the past in the region. Perhaps it will spur on a healthy competitiveness in our towers downtown. Also, I hope that the phase-in of all three towers will not be too far apart from each other. One tower alone will look pretty lonely in that location.

Initial Proscenium plans unveiled - Children's theater and performing arts high school among projects

SANDY - Not just a Broadway-style theater could sprout here. A developer also plans to plop a children's theater, performing arts high school, an amphitheater and art galleries next to Interstate 15 and 10000 South in Sandy.
On Thursday, Orem-based Proscenium Development Inc. shared with the Planning Commission its initial plans for the first phase of The Proscenium, which is slated to open by fall 2011 with two other phases to follow in 2013 and 2015.
The colossal, $560 million mixed-use development features three, 30-story towers - only one of which would debut with phase one - that will require a code amendment to exceed Sandy's cap on building height at 140 feet, or about 10 stories.
On July 1, Sandy's City Council is scheduled to consider whether to do away with the height limit entirely in the suburb's central business district. The council meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 10000 S. Centennial Parkway.
At least one resident opposes the plan to bring skyscrapers to Sandy.
"It's a blight on the environment," Kim Lane told the Planning Commission. "I did not like it when we did the Jordan Commons because it blocks the view of our scenic, beautiful mountains."
Proscenium architect Russell Platt countered, saying the project's density has environmental benefits by reducing "urban sprawl" and the driving and pollution that accompanies it.
The developer has replaced plans for 120 condos in the first tower with a 250-room hotel because of a slump in the Salt Lake Valley condo market. The building would still contain 36 condos on the top floors, along with office space on the lower floors and a spa in the center. A 2,400- to 2,800-seat Broadway-style playhouse would be adjacent.
The Planning Commission plans to have a series of discussions on the project before considering preliminary approval of the site plan.

City Creek Center Underground Parking and Towers 6 and 7 update.
June 20th 2008

Underground parking

Towers 6 and 7 underground parking

Somebody wrote "We will never forget 9-11 right in front of where the Key Bank Tower once stood.

Also the wooden sidewalk is now gone in front of where buildings 6 and 7 will go. It's alot easier to see the work since there is now a much better view of the project.

Crews are placing bricks on the front of the parking garage

I must say them using bricks makes it more like a building and less like a parking garage. It's starting to look nice.

Odd Fellows Building's new foundation across the street. Plus from this angle it look like they are adding to the side of the 300 S building that they are renovating. It looks like balconies.

Stadium nears completion - Construction crews are praised for quick work

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1...237428,00.html

Alan, left, and Adam Jones, the first season ticket holders for the new stadium, check out the view from their front-row midline seats with Leo the Lion. (Kristin Murphy, Deseret News)

Crews have done extraordinary work to get the stadium ready to go within about 18 months, Rindlisbacher said. Last summer, temperatures on the work site reached 130 degrees, when the hot sun reflected off fresh concrete. Conversely, over the hard winter, men had to use propane torches to melt ice off the stairs.

Also I did drive by that site today. Crews have already dug out the hole for the hotel. I'm surprise to see just how fast these guys are moving along with this project. Not long now till we start seeing I bet wooden frames take shape.

While it's not a full service Hyatt, it will be nice to have the Hyatt presence entering the market. It's a step towards a new DT Hyatt Regency.
