What happens during a building inspection?

I figure somebody here might be able to answer this one for me.

Where skyscrapers are concerned, what happens during a routine inspection?
Do city inspectors only concern themselves with mechanical things like electricity, plumbing, elevators or HVAC? Or do they concern themselves with structural stuff as well?

Do they just show up unannounced- "Hey, it's inspection time, your number's up!", or is that sort of thing scheduled in advance?

Now, we're talking finished buildings here, not under construction. Aside from construction, would city inspectors really concern themselves much with a completed skyscraper?
