At least it sounds more promising than the XFL.

UAB will tear down the old McDonalds within 30 days of August 3 (McDonald's doesn't want to confuse their patrons with two buildings) and has the ability to take possession of all the other parcels on that block at will. The new signage on the McDonalds on 5th Ave S and 15th Street went up yesterday afternoon.
What about the old Captain's D, Arby's, and Panda Buffett?? Will they tear those down around the same time??

No, just the McDonald's (as far as I know) and maybe Capt Ds. The others are still operating and I don't think UAB will force them out until the eminent domain issue is settled with regards to the value of the property.

Wow, great news about the ABA. I'm not a huge sports fan but I may go to a few games just to support the team, I hope it succeeds and this helps Bham.

I travel I-65 every day to and from work. I work in lovely Pelham. Everyday I find myself cringing at the shape I-65 is in. I hate how once you get past the 459 junction the road suddenly becomes smooth and the overall condition of the road is so much better (except for the road work at Valleydale Rd.). I was wondering why the entire stretch hasn't been resurfaced to resemble the stretch in shelby county. Does it have any thing to do with the surburbanites?

Also, on the parts of 65 in B'ham and Hoover where there are median walls there are these bolts that stick out of the top of the median wall. They appear about every 50 ft or so, not a problem. The problem is that there seems to be what looks like plastic garbage bags wrapped around almost every set of bolts. This has been around for at least 4 yrs. I can't stand stand how awful it looks. Who is in charge of the daily maintenance of the interstates, if there is such a thing? While a minor thing, it does (in my opinion) look very trashy. Has anyone else ever noticed this?

I've notice this also. I cant understand why I65 looks the way it does from past the I20/59 interchange all the way to Shelby County. They resurface 120/59, what about I65?? And those damn message boards have got to go if they are gonna use them.

I have no pics, but was lucky enough to go inside with DallasTexan and BhamBound in early July. The man who let us in re-developed the Alabama and gave us the grand tour, even playing the original Wurlitzer organ for us. If anyone can and hasn't been to the Alabama, get there, quick. Wow. We explored the Lyric across the street somewhat, but it's not in good shape and for safety's sake, we stayed in the middle of the building for the most part.

I can say this: the Ham is in for a definate treat when the Lyric is restored. It will be stunning.

There are plans to restore the Lyric. Money is still being raised. The Birmingham News had a fantastic interior shot a few months ago.

By the way, there's a great shot of bodybuilders posing on these fire escapes near the end of the movie "Stay Hungry". I'll try to post some screen-caps this weekend.

Aha...someone else who's seen Stay Hungry. I always think of that movie when I pass the Tutwiler house on Mountain Brook Parkway that was featured in the film.

Never heard of the movie... Probably because I wasn't born until 7 years later. So, what's it about?

You'd probably like it:

Stay Hungry, 1976. Bob Rafelson (5 Easy Pieces, The Postman Always Rings Twice)

Plot Summary:
A syndicate wants to buy a whole district to rebuild it. They've bought every house except the small gym "Olympic", where Mr. Austria Joe Santo (Arnold Schwarzeneggar) prepares for the Mr. Universum championships a month ahead. The rich sunny-boy Craig Blake (Jeff Bridges) is brought in by the syndicate as a dummy to buy the gym. But then he starts to like the people and falls in love with Joe's friend Marie-Tate (Sally Field, with brief nudity).

The book it's based on was written in Birmingham by Charles Gaines (Pumping Iron) and the movie was filmed here. The scenes at the end of half-naked body builders running around the streets downtown, posing for homeboys, riding on top of buses... classsic. The earlier scenes of Arnold playing fiddle at a moonshine-fueled backwoods hoedown, of pre-Freddy Krueger Robert Englund oiling up the future Governator, of Ed Begley, Jr. and Fannie Flagg jaunting into the Birmingham Country Club... priceless.

Well, I was only 8 when the movie was released and never heard about it until years later. I saw it on cable about 10 years ago...WTBS I believe.

Air charter company expands to Birmingham
Friday, August 05, 2005
CHARLES R. McCAULEY
News staff writer

Atlanta-based North Star Aviation Specialists LLC is expanding its air charter service to Birmingham, using planes that seat from five to eight passengers to reach East Coast cities and the Bahamas.

Spokesman Darren Callahan said the company initially will operate eight planes out of JetSouth, a fixed based operator at Birmingham International Airport. It will focus on attracting customers from Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Montgomery - and Mobile eventually - for direct, private charters, he said.

Callahan said North Star already has gotten a couple of clients and made about four flights in the past week.

Three-fourths of North Star customers are business professionals, he said, adding there is a large group of Alabamians who take leisure trips and who travel to vacation or second homes. Football fans at the University of Alabama and University of Alabama at Birmingham also are potential customers, he said.

North Star, owned by Randy Jackson and Bruce McSwiggan, bases its aircraft in hangars at Tara Field south of Atlanta. Jackson started flying in 1971 at Fulton County, Callahan said. McSwiggan started when he was a small child flying with his dad.

For 27 years, the company has been providing air transportation to the traveling public through charter service under a Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 certificate.

Continued growth:

It has eight planes now and the two principals want to have 100 in the next three years as it moves to expand, Callahan said.

"We think Birmingham will become a big operation for us because Atlanta, I don't think we have space (to grow) at that airport.... You've got to have a lot of hangars for 100 airplanes," he said.

North Star probably will base an aircraft in Birmingham and station another set of pilots in the city, he said. He also said the company may assign a support crew to Birmingham.

The company also plans to offer fractional ownerships in its aircraft, deals in which customers can buy one-quarter share of a plane.

New Birminghamster up:

"BJCC - In a short statement issued from his throne room, Representative John Rogers has revealed that although his forces have not yet completed construction on the proposed Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center Expansion, the new dome is fully armed and operational. Addressing Gary White, the rebellious swing voter on the County Commission, he added "As you can see, your constituents have failed. Now you will witness the final destruction of home rule, and the end of your insignificant rebellion."
