If the RBs can turn things around and stay on their winning ways, they could gain a fanbase. For a while when the Riders were on a roll, a lot of bandwagon jumpers with no connection to SK suddenly became Rider fans... they are by far the #2 football team in Winnipeg even after you take the SK expats out of the equation, but that number is dropping as their misery goes on.

Then again, no one outside of Ottawa seems to pay much attention to their sports teams... there is a good number of young people in Winnipeg who became big fans of the Canucks, Oilers and Flames during their Stanley Cup runs of years ago, but you sure don't see many people wearing Sens gear.

Denis Shapovalov is going to the semi-finals in Montreal!!!

This is insane!!! A semi-final at an ATP 1000 tournament for the 18 years old (Milos Raonic for example has reached the semis at a Masters 1000 only 8 times and had never won such tournament).

I like Raonic a lot and I want his serve, but Denis has a flair that is so appealing. And I love the support of the Montreal crowd.

Gutsy effort by Denis but Zverev showed why he will be #1 in less than a year. Shapovalov will have to reorganize his schedule now. Probably the most dramatic jump I've seen in a week going from 143 to 67 in the ATP rankings.

The US Open should give him a wild card berth.

Women's Rugby World Cup has number three ranked Canada 2 and 0 with wins over Hong Kong (98-0) and Wales (15-0). They will next face number two ranked New Zealand (Thurs Aug 12) who have done even better outscoring their opponents (NZ 121 - HK 0) and (NZ 44 - Wales 12).

I was just about to post this...

Montreal showing it's the best "event" city in the World. Beating its own record from 2011.

Quote:
The previous attendance record for a one-week tournament was also set in Montreal in 2011, with a total of 213,760.
Montreal also holds the women record for a week long tournament.

Quote:
The Rogers Cup is reaching new heights.

Sunday’s final at Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, which saw third-seed Agnieszka Radwanska beat Venus Williams in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, helped the event break the world record for attendance at a week-long women’s tennis tournament.

The event drew 181,996 spectators, topping the previous Rogers Cup high of 174,706 set in 2006.

...

“This is my favourite city. I love it,” said Williams, who’s still seeking her first tournament victory of the season. “I think I was hitting some balls on Sunday, and I couldn’t believe the massive number of fans here. I’ve never seen anything like it, even at a major.

“As much as I love Toronto, I wish the women’s tournament was here every year. I would love to continue my winning ways in Canada, in Quebec, so I’m looking forward to it.”

His play this year has gotten him into the top 100 in the Men's ATP rankings, good enough for automatic entry. Not sure when the cutoff date is for the US Open seeding but he's high enough now to get in on merit.

^^ He shot up to #67 and the US Open features 128 men's players so he should be ok.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but just to keep things real the US Open often draws in excess of 700,000. It's 2 weeks instead of 1 but still handily beats both Montreal and Toronto on a weekly basis.

It was great to see the Caadian Shapovalov do as well as he did. For me I have never really been intrigued by Tennis, but when I saw those highlight I was literally cheating out loud. It was great to see!

The Canadian Olympic hockey try-out team lost 0:3 to SKA at the Tournament of Nikolai Puchkov.

Did you compare a Grand Slam event with a Masters 1000? Check out the capacity of Arthur Ashe stadium as well as the total number of courts at Flushing Meadows and you will realize how stupid the comparison is.

Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger Aliassime won their first qualification match. They need to win 2 more in order to qualify for the US open.

Nice try. There's a reason the venues and draw in Montreal (and Toronto) are smaller.

Exactly, you can't compare a 1 week tournament (Masters 1000 and below) to a 2 weeks one (Grand Slam).

This is why the article specified it was a record for a 1 week tournament.

If you choose to believe that this makes Montreal the best event city in the world, so be it.

The city breath and lives for events so yeah...

-F1 weekend
-Now we got Formula-E (although still not major)
-Highest attendance for a 1 week tennis tournament.

Maybe Melbourne is ahead with a well attended F1 GP and a Grand Slam tournament rather than a Masters 1000 but that's about it.

Of course you could say NYC but then you have to consider the massive size of the big Apple.
