Thanks for the update, Hatman! This is by far my favorite construction project in our state at the moment, and any picture update is welcome. If you've got any more pictures, don't be shy.

Either I was on the same tour as Hatman or Friday was tour day at the Airport. My pictures are pretty similar.

Additional info I learned:
-North Concourse new opening date is Oct. 27, 2020 so a little over a month after the rest of the terminal is opened.

-The old garage will not be imploded. It will have to be taken down traditionally. They expect it to take 2-3 months then they can start stone column installation and move forward with south-east terminal.

-As Hatman said, the Baggage conveyor system is quite the site. On level 1, there are 14 carousels for the baggage handlers to drive up to load bags for flights. This will handle all the luggage at opening day.

-Once the central tunnel is completed, baggage conveyors will send luggage out to the north concourse and handled separately.

-The air handling in the airport is interesting. Rather than having tons of air ducts in the ceiling and having to heat/cool the whole space, you will notice air vents in each of the columns and along walls which will put out hot/cold air. They are only concerned with keeping the bottom 12' of the building comfortable. Air returns are located in the ceiling. This will help in their quest for Leed Gold.

If they're looking to name it after someone, that seems like an excellent choice.

Knowing Utah, the naming rights would have been bought from some MLM network marketing scheme e.g. doTERRA, Nu Skin, or Younique International Airport

There's nothing wrong with SLC International Airport, leave it as it is.

There's an interesting slide in the latest board meeting minutes about runway length and aircraft performance.

The slide indicates with a 13,500' runway, an A350 can BARELY make it to Seoul. Extending that to 15,000' feet makes it more feasible, and Beijing can even squeeze into the limits. Shanghai is too far though.

It also indicates that with a 13,500' runway, a 787-9 can't make it to Seoul - Osaka is about the range limit. It would require an extension to 15,000' feet to make it to Seoul.

Given the current runways are only 12,000' feet, it makes me question the feasibility of a flight to Seoul - seems like they would have to block a serious number of seats.

I couldn't agree more. Salt Lake City deserves to have it's name in lights all around the country and now even the world. Having a major airport with the City name is a priceless ad advantage. Jake Garn was mentioned and I like Garn, but what good does it do for Salt Lake City's exposure to stamp a name on its airport that has no wide spread connection in out of state minds to Salt Lake City.

It could be like San Jose (SJC), which is technically "Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport."

Yep.. Major airports always include the city name, even if it's named after a person

Etc...

Salt Lake City Garn International would work just fine. The city name would never go away in association with the airport

Here's the name.. but that might not be the name

It's based in Salt Lake... but they might have a hub there

They're going to fly to underserved markets... but we don't know which ones yet

How are folks going to be transported to the North concourse?

Is the eastern side of the Northern concourse going to be built by 2024?

When it opens next year, the west tunnel (that was dug years ago) will be the only way to get there. My understanding is that it will have moving sidewalks. Once the old airport is torn down, they can then dig the main Central tunnel to the North Concourse. This will also have moving sidewalks but have space for a train if future concourses are built. This tunnel will also have baggage conveyors to transport luggage.

I know they planned to open the west half a month after the main terminal opens in 2020 as for the east side, I think they planned to have it open at the same time as the main terminal east.
