PHILADELPHIA | The Alexander | 370 FT | 32 FLOORS

Title: The Alexander
Project: luxury apartments, retail, townhomes, Mormon history and community center
Architect: Robert A.M. Stern
Developer: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
Location: 1601 Vine St., Philadelphia, PA
Neighborhood: Museum District/Franklintown
District: Center City
Floors: 32
Height: 370 feet

Mayor Nutter held a press conference a few minutes ago to talk about plans for the 1600 block of Vine Street, which will have two new facets — residential and religious. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, the complex will include a 32-story tower with 258 rental apartments and 13 three-story townhouses; a 24,000-square-foot Mormon Family History Center and community center; retail shops; and “a new tree-lined privately-owned public street [that] will connect Vine Street to Wood Street.”

Well, Flyers2001, there's that expansion you were talking about in the SLS thread! (Commented on the aerial view of Philly)

I actually like it. It looks like it was there for years (in a good way, not imposing or sticking out like a sore thumb, etc.)

It looks like the building will be 124.11 m (approx. 407 ft) in height according to http://www.emporis.com/buildings/121...delphia-pa-usa. BuzzBuzzHome also has up to date information on construction status, units and more. You can follow the project on BuzzBuzzHome at https://www.buzzbuzzhome.com/1601-vine-street

Would be cool if it was over 400+. So the building does look different than the renderings. The base of the building is an H shape in the renderings but currently it is not. Anyone have any ideas?

Emporis is incorrect, and usually is.

If you look at page 10 of the CDR submission to the city by the developers, the tower is 370 FT to the roof, and at most 380 FT to the top of the mechanicals:

Maybe its one of those City Datum things: 407 feet from City Datum. 27 feet . . . about the same as the City Datum thing that got everyone thinking CITC was 26 feet taller at 1147.

I for one welcome our new Mormon overlords and the tastefully designed palaces from which they shall benevolently rule over us.

More good news. I'm sure this will be a quality project with Stern on board--this is his specialty after all.

Good looking infill. While I would have preferred a flashier tower at such a visible location, Stern's designs are always classy looking. They're the kind of quality designs with classic massing that make the more modern towers really pop in contrast. I'm really happy the base seems to be ringed with street level retail.

Can't wait to walk into a bar there and see an 18 beer tap of nothing but O'Douls.

Or the Starbucks that serves only decaf.

If the Chinatown Eastern Tower (below) gets built at 1001 Vine Street in addition to the Mormon Tower at 16th and Vine, things will be very interesting driving up Vine from the Ben Franklin Bridge area.

Source: PCDC

I think the new Mormon tower is very nice and classy.
