Casinos and New Airport for SA??

Not sure how many of you all saw this on KSAT 12 a couple of weeks ago but a psychic is predicting SA will have both within 10 years or so....

From KSAT 12-

Psychic Says New Airport In City's Future

Renowned Psychic Predicting Business to Prosper in San Antonio With Second Airport

“I was meditating last night on the future and I saw a second airport here .. for cargo and international trips”, says Harribance, who sees San Antonio’s future dependent on moving people and cargo. He sees our current airport as problematic for the city, with it’s limited size and ability to service international flights quickly. He predicts we will have a second airport, located 30 to 45 minutes away from where the airport is now.

Harribance, who in 1994 correctly predicted today’s price of a barrel of oil, also says San Antonio will weather these tough economic times because businesses like to be here. As for those companies that leave, “Any company that leave … they’re gonna want to come back to San Antonio”, says Harribance. “A lot is going to happen in San Antonio”, he says, “it will be world famous for sports, medical discoveries, and tourism”.

Harribance sees his future visions by looking at pictures we took of downtown buildings, including the city’s municipal building and city hall. He saw “hard working people” at the municipal building, but “bad energy” at city hall. He also says the city needs to keep up with replacing old electrical systems in it’s older buildings as a way to prevent fires.

Our mayor and city council all get the thumbs up from Harribance, who says “Most politicians do deals and contracts and they cheat .. I would say we have an honest city council and mayor”.

Still, San Antonio will see crime increase this fall, and the city raising taxes next year and in 2010. Outside the city limits, he sees large tanks used for storage, possibly water storage. And in 10 years or so, “all of downtown is going to have casinos and slot machines”, Harribance tells us.

Of course, any psychic worth their weight in San Antonio has to foresee the Spurs future. Harribance says the black and silver “will come back .. it’s a good team .. it’s just some of them are overpaid and they don’t want to do their jobs”.

I don't think an airport being 30 to 45 minutes away would make it be "here" as in San Antonio. I also don't see how having one that far out would make businesses want to be in San Antonio. Maybe in New Braunfels, though. There has to be some vacant land somewhere in San Antonio big enough for a new airport. However, the city doesn't seem all that concerned with building a new airport within 10 years, or even planning a new one within that time frame, otherwise they wouldn't be building two new terminals at their existing one. Construction on those will likely last at least 2 years.

As for casinos in San Antonio, or anywhere in Texas. That's not up to local governments to decide. With Republicans having a strong hold on politics here, it'll never happen. The state would have to be on the brink of bankruptcy before it would.

I disagree. I think there's plenty of people moving in to our state that the Republican strong hold the state currently has is going to come to an end. There was a poll done several months ago about having casinos in Texas. Correct me if I wrong because I know you people will but I believe over 60% of the people said that they would vote yes for casinos in Texas.

The second airport that comes to mind is Port SA on the southwest side.

But it still has to be approved by politicians. Even if residents want it, if politicians say no, then it doesn't matter. It first has to come up for a vote, and they'll likely not allow that. I think the only way it could was if Texas was in some economic crisis, but Texas is very well off financially, so I doubt it would.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that Mississippi and Alabama are as right-wing politically as Texas, but MS is one of the biggest casino states in the country, and AL has a few "casino-like" places with slot machines (but not table games).

I think possibly the bigger issue for TX (and GA and TN, for that matter) is that it has a well-established state lottery, and the people who depend on revenue from the lotto (including the education lobby) aren't going to want competition from casinos. Louisiana is one of the few exceptions that has both.

Politicians, at the maximum, spend 1/4 of their time (approx the election year) worrying about what their voters want. The other time is dedicated to wherever the money is coming from, be it a small wealthy minority, big business, etc.

...and that money is coming from Las Vegas, and Louisiana. There is simply no way casino gambling will ever happen in Texas as long as LV and LA have money to spend on our politicians. Republicans or Democrats in control, lottery or no lottery, it won't matter.

Is your assumption 30-40 minutes out means between San Antonio and Austin?

Are we debating the merits of a psychic's predictions?

Right or wrong, debating this sort of thing is... well, nevermind.

Not necessarily, but New Braunfels did come to mind. There's been a lot of talk around the forum about something like that. Outside of the forum though, I've not really read anything to suggest it.

I hear you, man Psychic or not, SAT's masterplan will serve the city's aviation needs for the forseeable future. It can be built out to like 55 gates, which is nearly twice as many as it has now. New airport ain't gonna happen.

Shoot, I just gave this story legitimacy, didn't I?

It does border on ridiculous, especially since it would be the fourth public airport in town. Also, gambling would ruin the river walk.

Maybe adding gambling would increase air travel so much an airport would be needed. Las Vegas is building a new one.

How exactly would casino gambling ruin the Riverwalk? And also, people said for decades that Texas would never allow parimutuel wagering along with horse racing to return, and it did. Thanks to a democratic Governor's efforts. (Ann Richards). So the thought of having gambling in Texas isn't that far-fetched when you look at history.

Put the casino(s) in the new airport. Problem solved.

Not just that. Allowing casinos in TX would mean that it would have to pass both House and Senate and then goes as a referendum to the TX voters before any coins fall through the coin slot.

If it were to be passed by both Houses, then i would gaurantee that the voters would approve of gambling in TX. Remember the Blue Laws?

I think support in Houston and Dallas and border towns would be strong due to their proximity to tribal casinos, but the central part of the state will be a huge problem and probably mean this: it ain't happening.

We do have two major airports, Kelly for cargo and SAT for passengers.

And predicting gambling in the future of a tourist city and fires due to faulty wiring in old buildings are a bold prediction.
