LA Asian Areas, and other SoCal photos, Nov 2011

I might have posted these photos 1 1/2 years ago, but I thought they would make an interesting counterpoint to the Flushing NYC photos I just posted. I think these are all from two trips to Southern California in Nov 2011 and Jan or Feb 2012.

First up, the suburbs of Torrance and Gardena, with their large Japanese community. An izakaya inside a Torrance stripmall

Hostess bar

Inside a Mitsuwa Marketplace. It just opened that morning, when we dropped by before going on to Santa Barbara for the day.

Out of order, but a Japanese breakfast place a few hours before

Some photos of Santa Barbara, 2 1/2 hours drive up the coast

San Ynez Valley nearby

A wet and chilly Little Tokyo photo

Mall in Koreatown

Getty Villa up in Malibu.

Santa Monica

Manhattan Beach, I think

The Vietnamese town of Westminster, which I had never visited before.

Vietnamese mall

Big Bear Lake, or is it Arrowhead? About 2 hours drive from LA. I went here as part of circuitous route to Palm Springs, or rather Palm Desert

It's not good skiing, but the fact that there is any skiing so close to a subtropical city is amazing

I think this might be Arrowhead

Finally arriving in Palm Desert

God damn I love SoCal.

And Santa Barbara is so insanely beautiful.

Thank you for this thread! Wintertime is strangely my favorite season in California, so these photos made me look forward to that time of year.

nice tour. you have to love the variety of So Cal. everything at your fingertips!

its embarrassing that i still havent been to the Getty villa. looks so beautiful

In regards to skiing, an extra long rant for no reason....there are actually very good resorts down here. Im pretty sure that was a pic of Snow Valley, which is a smaller beginners mountain. You also have Mountain High, which is about 1 hour 15 min from downtown LA and its at about 6500 feet elevation, big bear resorts (7000 - 8800 feet) which are two very good resorts in big bear and all three have top notch parks, jibs, etc. Lastly, Mount Baldy resorts (7000 - 8500) is family run and older, but after fresh powder, its comparable to Mammoth in regards to terrain and difficulty. We also have a couple small family run resorts in Angeles crest that are only open after big storms since they dont have snowmaking. Mountain high will get about 125 - 150 inches of natural snow a year, big bear resorts about 150 - 175 and Baldy about the same. Lastly, dont forget that snowboarding was invented here so it cant be that bad! lol

I love winter in SoCal. Cool/moderate temps and snow capped mountains under clear blue skies.

Excellent pics, makes me wonder why I don't get out more.

LA is so Asian! I'm still only months into living in CA, but I love venturing into the Asian malls, and thanks for the skiing tips LASportsFan, looking to develop my own skiing capabilities.

This´s a very intense and complete tour. Thanks for your pics, bricky! It´s never late to share them and to show the beauty of Southern California. When I visited that area, just two years ago, I fell in love with it.

Congrats for the thread and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

It's Lake Arrowhead, which, coincidentally, is where I am now. Anyways, great set! The amazing Asian food in L.A. is one of the greatest aspects of the city.

Nice thread, but you left out the asian communities grouped together in the cities of San Gabriel, Monterey Park, Alhambra, and Rosemead. That's L.A's eqivalent to Flushing. Its one of my favorite parts of town to dine out in. Check out the Pork Rolls at 101 noodle house on Valley Blvd if you go.

Even though I lived in LA for a bit, I'm ashamed to say that I never made it out to the San Gabriel Valley. Next time I guess! And I wish someone would post some picks here! Does it look kind of similar to Westminster? Just more extensive?

Westminster is mostly Vietnamese. You'll find Chinese areas a bit farther south in Irvine and the surrounding areas.
