Buffalo,New York - Allentown

The Allentown neighborhood is the area of city blocks surrounding Allen Street, which runs approximately 1 km long and is about 1.5 km north of downtown Niagara Square. Allentown development dates back to the late 1820s, and the oldest existing structures dating from the 1830s. The area has been known for decades as an arts and entertainment area, and for its eclectic residents. For many decades it also served as the center of the Buffalo gay community.

Elmwood Avenue and Allen Street is the heart of Allentown, which is differentiated from the Elmwood Village neighborhood located further north.

The area is known for its colorfully painted homes and businesses, many dating from the 1840s.

To the east, Allen connects to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Center campus, which is adjacent to Allentown across Main Street. The new University of Buffalo Medical School building towers over the area.

Also in Allentown, the Trinity Episcopal Church (foundation placed 1869) is one of many 19th century churches in Buffalo, and contains many windows created by John Lafarge and Louis Comfort Tiffany.

There certainly is a lot of color used on those homes, it brightens it up to Caribbean cheerfulness!

Nice pictures! Allentown is one of the only neighborhoods I've never really explored. I've been along Johnson Park, but that's it. Allentown has some good bars and pubs, I heard.
