Other than downtown. This is the best part of Burlington. Aldershot should be Hamilton.

Burlington receives proposal to transform Solid Gold strip club to rental apartments

The owners of a Burlington strip club are looking to redevelop the site and build two new rental apartment buildings.

The developer, 71 Burlington Plains Inc., wants to demolish the Solid Gold building site, which spans 53 and 71 Plains Rd. E. and 1025 Cooke Blvd., and replace it with two mixed-use buildings at 10 and 12 storeys with a combined 1,208 square metres of retail and service commercial space at grade level and 450 residential units.

The proposal also features 581 parking spaces (91 at surface, 461 underground and 29 lay-by) and accesses from Cooke Boulevard and Clearview Avenue.

While some may be pleased with the redevelopment plan, the heights of the buildings are causing some concern with Ward 1 Coun. Rick Craven.

"Obviously, it is good news to hear that the strip club will eventually leave Aldershot, but this proposal does raise other questions," said Craven.

"Currently, building heights on Plains Road are generally restricted to six storeys, but city planners have also said that it is desirable to intensify the area around the GO station, so that more people will live within walking distance of public transit," he continued.

"Additional height is logical …. We have a long way to go on this file. There is plenty of time for public debate."

A neighbourhood public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20 at the East Plains United Church, 375 Plains Rd. E.

City staff is also looking for public feedback on the application before a recommendation is made to the planning and development committee of council.

The updated design of these is funky too... but not in the good way, like 437 Plains E. I think I preferred the darker look of the original renders, though they weren't very exciting.

It's more the eastern building at 71 Plains that bothers me -- too many setbacks, and that top section is very narrow. A mirror image of 53 would look better IMO.

Great news. Burlington desperately needs an express service toward Hamilton though and in general along Plains. A BRT-lite with signal priority would have been a good start at some of these intersections. At least Plains is getting a bicycle track for all this dense development. Aldershot is going to be a great place to live in a few years.

They did have express bus service pre-covid but it was cut and hasn't been restored, from what I remember.

The Plains Rd bus service is generally surprisingly excellent and high frequency for a 905 suburban bus service. It's likely the busiest and most frequent service in all of Halton Region. I agree BRT would be nice, but Plains Rd also isn't particularly congested on the regular from my experience. It's an even better service now considering transfers between 905 bus agencies is free.

Yep, the 101 ran express from Burlington GO to downtown Hamilton, I think. No idea why they haven't brought it back, it was well used from what I remember. The regular 1 gets incredibly busy in the morning and evening rush hour. You're lucky to get a seat on it during those times.
