Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. unveiled Dec. 26 a high-performance computing system three times faster than any other supercomputer in Taiwan, underscoring the nation’s high-tech expertise and cutting-edge R&D capabilities.

The supercomputer, operating in southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Software Technology Park, is capable of operating at 6 peta floating point operations per second (petaflops), equivalent to the computing power of around 5.4 million iPhone Xs, the firm said.

According to Hon Hai, better known as Foxconn Technology Group—the world’s largest contract electronics-maker whose customers include Apple Inc.—the system will have applications in a wide range of fields such as sports data analysis and animation imaging, and is poised to make significant contributions to the health care industry. The company said the supercomputer will be able to quickly analyze, compare and process a vast array of images and data from medical tests and samples.

By incorporating cloud computing and a variety of artificial intelligence programs, the system will provide medical professionals with the information and resources to make more accurate and effective diagnoses, the company said. DNA sequencing will take 30 minutes instead of three days and be 250 times more efficient, and surgery and radiation therapy simulations will require six minutes, as opposed to the standard 24 hours, it added.

More than 250 enterprises have set up operations at the southern Taiwan park since its launch in 2000, creating over 8,000 job opportunities and leading to NT$23.62 billion (US$794 million) in investments. Located next to the Port of Kaohsiung, the 587-hectare zone is close to Kaohsiung Exhibition Center and serviced by Kaohsiung International Airport as well as the country’s first light rail system.

Hon Hai unveils supercomputer system

Dec. 26 (CNA) Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world's largest contract electronics maker, on Tuesday unveiled a supercomputer system with a high performance computing function.

The supercomputer is located in the Kaohsiung Software Park, boasts a computing function equivalent to 5.4 million iPhone Xs and is three times faster than existing supercomputers in Taiwan, Hon Hai said.

The device is the most powerful high performance computer and most efficient supercomputer in the country, the company added.

Hon Hai said the supercomputer can be used for a wide range of applications including medical care, communications, industrial production and environmental engineering.

In addition, the newly unveiled super computer will be connected to customers by optical fiber networks operated by Asia Pacific Telecom Co., a telecom service provider and subsidiary of Hon Hai, that provides services to its customers islandwide, the manufacturing giant said.

The services provided by the supercomputer will include analysis of medical records and sports data as well as artistic and animation applications, Hon Hai said.

Lu Fang-ming (呂芳銘), chairman of Asia Pacific Telecom, said as Taiwan's market is limited in size, Hon Hai has set its sights on the global market, adding the group is expected to seek partners overseas to seize more business opportunities.

Hon Hai, an iPhone and iPad assembler for Apple Inc., is gearing up to diversify its businesses from hardware production to software development in a bid to boost its bottom line.

Shares in the company have come under pressure on the local main board in recent sessions amid concerns over weaker than expected shipments of the premium iPhones, the signature model for the 10th anniversary of the device.

On Tuesday, Hon Hai shares closed down 0.98 percent at NT$91.20 (US$2.77) on the main board.

ORDINARY PEOPLE:AI medical diagnosis technology in the US can cost up to US$8,000, a prohibitive cost that Hon Hai hopes to reduce for general public access

By Lisa Wang / Staff reporter

Hon Hai Technology Group (鴻海科技集團), known as Foxconn Technology Group (富士康) overseas, yesterday launched its first high-performance computing (HPC) system applying artificial intelligence (AI) to precision medicine, sports data analysis and 3D rendering.

Early this month, Hon Hai unveiled a multi-access edge computing platform and facial recognition technology for a wide range of applications from home security to e-commerce.

The system is Hon Hai’s latest step to introduce AI and high-computing technology to everyday life, such as in precision medicine.

The supercomputer, using AI, can identify tumors and analyze genomic variations in treatment, allowing doctors to create customized healthcare plans, a company statement said.

PREVENTATIVE

“HPC system technology can be applied to a wide range of subjects. We target scientific research and preventive medicine,” Hon Hai business group president Lu Fang-ming (呂芳銘) said.

“The system is primarily used for ultra-high-definition, up to 8K, image identification and analysis,” Lu added.

The HPC system in Kaohsiung is the result of Hon Hai’s decades-long efforts in developing cloud-enabled technologies, Lu said.

The computing power of the HPC system is equal to that of 5.4 million iPhone X’s, he said.

“We want to provide ‘computing as a service,’” Lu said. “We are providing virtual machine services, different from the colocation service offered by most telecoms in Taiwan.”

Hon Hai’s HPC is the nation’s first privately run supercomputer and the company is aiming to provide more affordable services for ordinary people, Lu said.

Using AI, the system can be used to help sequence genomic data and help identify genome-caused diseases, Lu said.

“This would cost between US$6,000 and US$8,000 in the US. We hope to reduce the expense and allow the general public access,” he added.

Redfalcon Computing (睿驊電算), a subsidiary of Hon Hai, is working to develop deep-learning in X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging to identify breast and lung cancers.

Foxconn Builds Taiwan’s Largest Supercomputer

Michael Feldman | January 4, 2018 17:02 CET

TOP500 NEWS

A six-petaflop system has been installed at Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Software Technology Park, making it the most powerful supercomputer in the country.

The machine was constructed by Hon Hai Precision Industry Company, aka Foxconn Technology Group, the electronics contract manufacturer that assembles the iPhone and iPad for Apple. Based in New Taipei, Foxconn is Taiwan’s largest company, with a revenue of $131.8 billion (2016). The multinational enterprise operates across Asia, Europe, South America, and North American, and as of 2015, employed over 1.3 million workers. Besides Apple, Foxconn customers have included Microsoft, Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Sony, Amazon, and Google, among others.

As an original design manufacturer (ODM), Foxconn has constructed various servers before, but this appears to be the first time the company has built an entire system. No information was provided on the makeup of the new supercomputer in Taiwan, although given the nature of Foxconn, the system almost certainly relied on commercial off-the-shelf componentry.

According to a report in Taiwan Today, the supercomputer will “have applications in a wide range of fields such as sports data analysis and animation imaging, and is poised to make significant contributions to the health care industry.” Another article from Focus Taiwan reported that the system will also be used for communications, industrial production and environmental engineering workloads.

The medical applications include analyzing imagery and other patient test records, as well as genomic data, helping physicians make faster and more accurate diagnoses. The system will also be used to run surgery and radiation therapy simulations that will provide doctors with near-real-time feedback. The Taiwan Today report mentioned that some of these applications will incorporate AI technology.

Although the supercomputer is installed at the Kaohsiung Software Technology Park on the southeastern coast of the island nation, it will be accessible by customers throughout Taiwan. To facilitate this, the system will be connected by optical fibers operated by Asia Pacific Telecom (a subsidiary of Hon Hai), which provides network services throughout the country.

The Taiwanese supercomputer could portend a move by Foxconn to get into the whitebox supercomputer business. If so, the company could offer an interesting alternative to Supermicro, an HPC system provider that occupies a middle ground between an OEM and ODM. Foxconn though, is about 50 times larger than Supermicro and could use its massive supply chain as a strategic advantage to tamp down costs.

In fact, Foxconn could provide more general competition to HPC OEMs if it decided to move up the food chain a bit and provide something closer to a turnkey hardware-software solution. On a revenue basis, Foxconn is as large as HPE, Dell EMC, and Lenovo – currently, the three biggest suppliers of HPC systems – combined.

Assuming a Linpack benchmark is submitted, the Foxconn supercomputer will almost certainly land a top 50 spot on the next TOP500 list in June. Taiwan’s current, and only entry in the list is the “Peta HPC” machine, a two-petaflop (peak) supercomputer built by Fujitsu and installed at the National Center for High Performance Computing. It resides at the number 95 position in the latest rankings.
