Frost in East Van this morning means snow making on Cypress.

On topic: weather still looks to be disastrous

Rain in Vancouver in February is now considered disastrous? The word that comes to mind is more like "typical."

The sky is not falling . . . that's precipitation. I'll end the suspense now. Cypress will get rain during the Olympics. I think they've planned for that possibility. I don't think it spells doom. I've watched ski events in rain and sleet. It's called weather, and winter athletes anticipate it's not always perfect. Ski jumping is actually one of the trickiest sports, and no one has even mentioned it. You can have a perfectly sunny, clear day and have to reschedule the event because there's a breeze (not a windstorm . . . just a bit of a breeze).

They may even need to reschedule some of the events if the rains are hard enough they need to cover the surface for the day. Egads! They'd have to do the same thing if we got a snow storm.

Cypress will also likely have a good stretch of weather at some point during the Games as well. When that happens, I don't think it will qualify as a "miracle" . . . again it will simply be the weather.

I care less about the weather's effect on Cypress, than I do about how it looks to the media. NBC's coverage the other day had a backdrop of dark, low clouds blocking out the North Shore and an air of unremitting gray. February is not the best time to showcase Vancouver to the world, notwithstanding the odd nice day.

And because of that, Cypress was probably able to make some snow during the night.

Unfortunately, it is now +6 degrees on Cypress.

Of course, if the geniuses who insisted on holding some venues on Cypress despite an El Nino being forcasted since last spring had been tarred and feathered and run out of town from the beginning (and all the venues staged at Whistler where they always belonged), then this entire stressful conversation (and all of the bad, awkward, embarrasing international press) would not be happening.

It's been snowing at Cypress today. Here's the NBC report, more recent than the Global link above, discussing the surprise snow:

http://www.nbcolympics.com/news-feat...needed+dusting

Reports on the conditions from athletes after their training runs today was also very positive.

I still think they are expecting some rain at higher elevations on Saturday evening, though the expected amounts aren't as high as originally forecast. I had read somewhere that they can cover the course with tarps as well if necessary to preserve the venue snow.

If the current weather projects hold, it is expected to dry out a bit - and perhaps even be a bit cooler - by early next week. Both would be favourable occurrences, of course.

We shall see.

I predict Ms. Nature will let loose a few good dumps of snow at Cypress
-- just in time for the Paralympics.

Looks like weather for the opening ceremonies will be about the worst possible: wet, warm and overcast.

I sure hope the networks have some canned footage of the city they used to beam around the world when they cut away from inside BC Place.
