St. Louis Follow Up

Hope you guys are not getting sick of my St. Louis pics. I realized that I had enough pics left from my summer visit to make another thread.

1.
Do you live in a modest two-family flat with a chain-link fence? Don't let that stop you from installing opulent sculpture:

2.
This is a rare scene in STL, because trash is almost always collected in the alley.

3.

4.

5.

6.
Volpi is a great old-fashioned store:

7.

8.
Four family buildings are very common in STL. Popular wisdom is that you can live free if you buy a 4-family building, because the other 3 units will pay the mortgage. Or that used to be. Don't know the reality these days.

9.

10.
I love a city where middle-class people can live in little castles:

11.

12.

13.
Please note: In St. Louis, front driveways are rare, even with single-family homes. If there is a driveway or garage, it is in the back on the alley.

This the New Cathedral (it isn't new, but the old Cathedral is downtown near the arch)

The old Playboy Club:

Plenty of water in STL:

Hailing a water taxi or evidence of flood?

St. Louis style pizza. You either love it or hate it. I love it.

Thanks for looking. Honestly, I would love to go back and spend days taking pictures of St. Louis. This is my 4th thread from a 48 hour visit, but, I feel as if I only scratched the surface.

This is my favorite STL thread of yours so far. I hope you can return... STL is one of the most beautiful mid-sized cities I've ever seen. Hopefully I'll be able to see it in person sometime soon.

Wow! You actually took the first flattering image of the Cargil Mill I've ever seen. How the hell did you do that? Please don't tell me you waited 15 minutes for a slow ass riverboat to cross in front?

Sweet ass pics! I keep hearing good things from Chicagoans about St Louis. It has some of them grasped by the nuts, because of its unique architecture and style.

Jesus. I am in Budapest right now and this thread is seriously making me homesick. St. Louis is my one and only.

Shadowmaster, when I first arrive in St. Louis, I eat one of these pizza's by myself. I like to go alone so I can really savor each bite. It is funny how much one misses hometown food and how satisfying it can be.

yes you sure did have plenty of good stuff left -- nice thread!

btw in ohio that is known as dayton style pizza. dayton uses mozzarella, but otherwise same thin crust party-pizza cut style. i love it too.

Next time I go through Dayton, I will have to try the pizza. I am sure I would like it. But, it is the provel cheese that makes it for me on the STL pizza.

according to Wiki (i.e. apply all relevant caveats) there are essentially three defining characteristics for STL style pizza (four if you count the square cut):

1) Provel cheese, a processed blend of three cheeses developed by the STL firm Costa Grocery in the 1950s.

2) The thin, yeast-less crust.

3) A sweet sauce - often allowed to simmer continuously to "concentrate and develop" the flavor - concocted by Sicilian immigrants in the first half of the 20th century.

Expat, i could look at your threads all day long. (and sometimes i do!) i really need to get out and explore STL's mid-century stuff. shots 8 and 9 are gorgeous. i would totally buy #9 (though i would have to replace that awful white siding with something more authentic.)

my home and my soul is in the middle of this grand continent, and i keep ripping across it like a man possessed, and only want to increase my worth to continue being able to rip across it, and have my home in the oldest and grandest section of old saint louis.

Oh it can get worse.

Rule of thumb is, if it goes over the hat, the flooding is bad. It's very hard for some people to believe how normal this flooding is for St Louis.

Love this. May I use it sometime?

@Want2beinSTL - I would love to do a thorough mid-century photo tour of STL. It is often overlooked and I think some people would be surprised.
I have been checking airline prices because I have an overpowering urge to fly out for a couple of days of more photo taking. I probably won't as I really cannot afford it right now. I don't understand how I can live a picture postcard life here in New England, surrounded by family, and still obsessed with being there.

@Xing - Thanks for posting the flooded statue. It is interesting to compare. Wish I had a picture of the statue without flooding for comparison.
