George Hamilton Day: July 24

Katamari Civic History.

George Hamilton Day and McQuesten Rose Dedication Ceremony at Whitehern Historic House & Garden

Hamilton, ON - July 15, 2010 – Come celebrate Hamilton’s rich history by attending the George Hamilton Day celebration and the McQuesten Rose dedication ceremony. The dual ceremony will take place on Sun. Jul. 24, 11:00 a.m., Whitehern Historic House & Garden, 41 Jackson Street West.

This year, George Hamilton Day will honour of Thomas B. McQuesten, in recognition of his many achievements in the growth and development of Hamilton in the early 20th century.

In addition to the George Hamilton Day announcement, there will be a ceremony to dedicate the picturesque McQuesten Rose. This rose, once grown in the gardens of Thomas B. McQuesten’s home, Whitehern, will be re-introduced as a symbol of our enduring heritage and the McQuesten’s family dedication to “beauty”.

In Hamilton, the August Civic Holiday is officially named “George Hamilton Day.” The concept of George Hamilton Day was developed by the Hamilton Historical Board and annually celebrates our city’s founder and namesake. Each year, the day is also dedicated to celebrating a notable historic citizen who has contributed to Hamilton’s history. Historical societies from the communities of Hamilton submitted individual names. Nominated individuals were voted on in a public process and Thomas B. McQuesten was the successful honouree for 2011.

In 1990, the MacNab Street Presbyterian Church selected the T.B. McQuesten Rose for dedication to the McQuesten family of Whitehern. The Church donated seven rose bushes for a memorial garden; one for each of the McQuesten children. By way of the root stock of the original rose, the “Amber Queen”, the McQuesten Rose will be re-introduced to the Whitehern gardens as part of the Dunington-Grubb landscape restoration and will be formerly dedicated on Jul. 24.

Please join us on Jul. 24, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Whitehern Historic House & Garden to celebrate this historic dual ceremony. Celebrating and supporting our history and heritage helps strengthen the city’s identity, stimulates the economy, and enhances community pride and tourism.
