Hong Kong 2006 - Part 3

21 Tung Tau Estate is one of the more historic public housing complexes in Hong Kong. Tower 22 came up first.

22 This thread is all about Kowloon City, which is made up of mostly older buildings.

30 Ma Wan is the island that separates the Tsing Ma and Kap Shui Mun Bridges. On one side, there is a fishing village, and on the other, a very modern housing complex. The residential part was built to resemble a resort, with bridge and ocean views. Here's the view from the eastern edge, facing Ting Kau Bridge in the distance.

32 These ferries take residents to Central.

36 Tsing Ma Bridge - imagine seeing that from your window every day.

39 The security guard was very nice and invited us to walk around the island.

40

41

42 The north side of Ma Wan faces Sham Tseng, which is famous for BBQ duck/goose. A few residential skyscrapers have popped up lately as well.

44 Another glimpse of the Ting Kau Bridge :

47 On the other side of the road, the contrast is quite huge. These new lowrises are not fully occupied yet.

48

49 Big towers and small rowhouses.

50

51 They really don't need all that concrete pavement. They just need a sidewalk and then the rest can be grass.

52

53

54 The biggest contrast is further west to the other side of the island, where fishing vessels dock even today.

64 From the outside, these don't look so bad, but we were told they're older buildings slated for demolition as the newer buildings seen in the previous photos are ready for occupation.

68 This is not even the official fishing village yet. That's further south.

Ma Wan is an island of contrasts. Originally a fishing outpost, urban development came after the Tsing Ma Bridge was completed. Unlike the rest of the city, this residential development focussed on a resort lifestyle, so the buildings are not as tall and bunched up and the beautification is much better. The old fishing village remains, and is very walkable from the newer areas.

Visitor Information - How to get there?
1. Take the ferry from Central to Park Island.
2. MTR to Tsing Yi and transfer to the Park Island shuttle bus.
3. Only authorized vehicles are allowed on the island, so stick to public transit.

Thank you for these wonderfully different angles of HK that we don't often see.
