WashCycle, a local blog here in DC, notes that the Arlington County GO(B)P opposes the four new Capital Bikeshare stations Arlington is getting as part of the system's expansion. WashCycle writes that these RepuB(P)licans are opposed to the loss of a couple of parking spaces (even though getting people to bike instead of drive for short trips will reduce demand for parking, thus making more spaces available) and the loss of revenue from meters (which is just bizarre, given the Republican hostility to almost all govt taxes and fees). I bet the Arlington County Republican Party wouldn't think twice about spending billions of dollars to widen I-66, however, but they are opposed to a few thousand dollars to add a few of the wildly popular bike-share stations.

SF Streetsblog today features an article on San Francisco's massive fleet of private for-profit rental bikes.

Apparently, the three biggest bike rental companies keep a fleet of 3,500-4,000 bikes at the ready, and Golden Gate Ferry reports carrying as many as 2,500 such bikes on peak days. The article explores how this booming $10M tourist bike business helps the local economy and justifies additional bike infrastructure.

Are there this many bikes for rent in other US tourist cities?

My girlfriend and I walked to the Georgetown waterfront in DC this past Saturday and many of the people using the Capitol Bikeshare bicycles were using them for recreation instead of transportation to get to another destination.

Bike and Roll rental bikes are a common sight around the tourist areas of DC. I don't know how many bikes they have.

Philly is launching it's long awaited bike share program this upcoming spring:

Quote:
Philadelphia will launch a bike share system with 60 stations and 600 bikes in spring 2015. Bike share will serve an area that stretches from the Delaware River into West Philadelphia and from the Navy Yard to North Philadelphia and Temple University’s main campus.
