'More like an evolution than a revolution': Saskatoon's retail landscape expanding, changing shape

ALEX MACPHERSON, SASKATOON STARPHOENIX
January 29, 2018

Saskatoon’s retail landscape is changing.

Sears Canada Inc. closed the doors of its Saskatoon store for good earlier this month, ending the financially-troubled company’s 65-year run as a national department store.

A few weeks earlier, the co-operative behind the Wholesale Sports chain packed up as well, closing 12 stores across Western Canada — including one in Saskatoon — and ending its 30-year run in the outdoor supplies business.

Those closures, as well as the abrupt failure of Target Canada in 2015, are part of what Maxwell Lee — who works in Colliers International’s retail leasing department — describes as a general shift away from traditional retailers.

There's another player in Saskatoon's craft beer industry.

Story here.

Yeah, but you had to know what you were looking for and when, otherwise there's no way you would have caught it. Still cool, nonetheless.

Soul Foods Conscious Grocer (currently by the Farmer's Market) is moving into the former Riversdale liquor store at 20th and Ave D.

Drink more coffee than tea but may have to try this one out for the pastries.

The pastries are fantastic, as is the tea. It's also a super chill, well designed space. It does feel like you are in Saskatoon any more. It's a great addition to the city. I definitely recommend it.

I heard a little dirt regarding the Burning Beard from the infallible friend of a friend source. Despite the sign on the front door claiming so, it is not undergoing renovations. It is in fact for sale and won't be reopening until new ownership has been found.

Any time I have gone to the Burning Beard it has been packed! If this is a lack of business decision, that really surprises me....I hope the "reno" story is for real OR new owners do keep it going, as it is one of my fave beer and grub spots!

I am guessing one of the reasons you liked it were its (unsustainably) low prices?

I never found its prices to be low. Was no cheaper to go there than anywhere else on Broadway.

i found the prices to be little higher than most regular pubs, but i didnt mind because of the way they did the food there. found it had an edge to how they cook and present it.

hope it stays open.

All good points, but the place hasn't been open since the first week of the year, the windows haven't been papered over (a tell tale sign of renovation) and there is no sign of so much as a can of paint inside. I'll stick to my unverified, dubious source.

I have heard two stories about the burning beard from some bar regulars, so nothing verified. One, that it was part owned by the HA and that the other owners bought out the HA’s share and then could not hack it on their own, financially. Two, that the rave events they held last year pissed off the calories owners and might have got them shut down because they didn’t have the right permits to be hosting those type of events. Either way, I don’t see it re-opening any time soon.

I’ve heard from a real estate friend that they handed in their keys and will not be re-opening. But last I heard, the Caesar mill (in martensville - might be the wrong name) is still open and was supposedly owned by the same crew.
