That reminds me, I still have my "4d" puzzle to put together. It has all of the WTC towers, and the FT looks great. But I just like looking at the box...

In the last render of the cladding it shows that the base cladding will cover up the large steel V cross beams. You wont see them.

While I mostly like the design of the tower and the curtainwall cladding is impeccable, I am not so appreciative of the material to cover the spire. The opaque white covering and tapering shape is reminiscent of a "Rolled Marijuana Joint" standing on its end.

If it were to be covered in reflective mirror-like Mylar, I feel it would give the spire more sparkle and oomph and de-emphasize the joint-like shape.

^ There's still a lot to be revealed about the spire, but STR's renderings do it justice as it relates to the tower. As far as tapering goes, it should be no other way, as a spire.

Allow me to clarify:

Of course a spire is best when it tapers. I was referring to the apparent "double-taper" where the spire is wider in the middle and narrower at the top and bottom. That is the effect I am not so keen on. As well as the choice of covering, as I mentioned earlier.

@STR

I absolutely love the giant WTC you posted but I noticed something unusual...

The prismatic glass on the base appears "true vertical" in your rendering when in fact it slants inwards at 7 degrees. Visually, the vertical lines in that oblique angle viewpoint of the base should not appear perpendicular to the ground nor parallel to the adjacent buildings.... Should they?

Hey guys and gals, just passing through. Great to see 1 WTC going up, and it looks beautiful already!

Looking forward to see it complete, along with the other towers. Kudos to you, New Yorkers!

Nice! Steel up to 47-48, and cladding going up

I was mulling going down to NYC in a few weeks for a photography excursion. Wanting to see the cladding in person is providing some extra motivation to do so. Last time I went down was on April 17th, and they were working on floors 23-24 that weekend... That puts some perspective on how much progress has been made in the last 7 months... the tower more or less doubled in height.

Almost 50 and it is still November. I forgot what the projected height was for the end of the year, but I'd like to think it will be ahead of schedule.

Yeah, I don't have any blueprints, so I mess with it as I figure things out. Now, are all the panes in-plane with each other (essentially one giant sheet slanting downwards at 7 degrees), or does each level repeat, like a saw blade, when viewed from the side?

Lynda Tollner is a program director in the World Trade Center Construction Department and she anticipate that the steel installation will be between the 55th and 60th floors by end of this year.

OOooooo Good question!... I hadn't thought of that idea.

I'm guessing the first version, to reflect more light from the plaza and passing traffic.

Wow you really get an appreciation for how massive this building is by seeing it in the context of the whole site. Even at 50 floors it still looks a bit stubby...
