Kellogg Plant redevelopment

News Conference scheduled for tomorrow.

This site has so much potential for the city.

Hopefully the start of something great and it kick starts the other sites like the Emco property and McCormicks.

It's still a factory – but it will be a fun factory.

A large portion of the vacant Kellogg cereal plant on Dundas Street will be reborn as a huge indoor adventure park called The Factory, it was announced Wednesday.

The London facility will feature North America's largest indoor ropes course with ziplines, a trampoline park, electric go-karts, mini golf, escape rooms, axe-throwing, an arcade and a toddler soft play area.

Another portion of the plant will hold London's newest craft brewery, called Silverstacks, named for the huge stacks in the former Kellogg factory’s power plant.

The adventure park and craft brewery are the first phase of a multi-year plan by Tillsonburg-based E&E McLaughlin Ltd. to redevelop the 93,000 sq. ft. site for a variety of uses including office, light industrial and recreational.

E&E McLaughlin has a history of offering older buildings a new lease on life.

The Factory is a $7-million, 170,000 sq. ft. space being developed by Londoner Dan Cassidy, who has a background in customer service, including managing a Canadian Tire store.

Cassidy and his financial partners believe the London market is ready for a big recreational attraction that will draw families year-round.

He has already been working on the first phase – 27,000 sq. ft. that is scheduled to open in January.

“We have a big space that we can bring all the key element of indoor adventure together with no seasonality. There's a huge market opportunity here,” Cassidy said.

Dan Cassidy, who is developing The Factory Indoor Adventure Park in the old Kellogg's factory in London, Ontario, lays out his plans during a press conference on Wednesday August 16, 2017. (MORRIS LAMONT, The London Free Press)

Silverstacks Brewery is an expansion of a craft brewery that was opened in Tobermory in 2014 by Matt Buckley and his wife Kristin, two former London police officers.

The London brewery will produce beer for the original Tobermory brewery as well as producing the new Silverstacks brand.

“There's always an opportunity for great craft beer. This is a great place to expand. It will be the central destination for this whole complex,” said Chris McCoy, another former London police officer who is the brewery's sales and market director.

Silverstacks also plans to open in Jan 2018.

E. E. McLaughlin is also looking for tenants to occupy the large glass-face office tower that was part of the Kellogg complex.

The company's assets include the former Electro-Motive Diesel plant on Oxford Street East.

The Kellogg plant opened in London in 1913 and closed in December 2014, eliminating more than 500 unionized jobs. The Michigan-based cereal giant moved most of the jobs to the United States.

There is like 90,000 sq ft of ready to go office space there as well.

Would be ideal new home for London Middlesex Health Unit to relocate too.
Plenty of parking for staff.

It would have been stupid of LACH to oppose that, but you just never know when the heritage people their teeth in something. And either LACH or The Londoner need to learn their directions. Their proposed "Smoke Stack District" is west of Ashland, not east of it.

Steel work is almost done for the new atrium on the west side of the building as seen in the article linked a couple posts up. Paradigm Spirits Co is renovating building 16, across from Powerhouse Brewery to be a new distillery. Carfax is also moving into the office building next year and work is progressing on the Children's Museum. Pretty impressive work there the last couple years.

I was there for the first time ever last night, and it's pretty neat to see the site re-envisioned. Lots going on, and although I was only in the Factory part, it's neat to see all the old components of the building mixed in with the new parts.

Glass panels now being installed for new NW corner atrium space. Good to see this plant being transformed so quickly. Quite the contrast to what Sierra construction is NOT doing on the old McCormick plant just a few block east. It continues to rot away with zero activity.

Hard Rock Hotel going in. This is a surprising announcement for that area. 2 phase opening, half next year, the rest by 2025. Will be interesting to see renderings for it.

At first I thought the same thing but in some ways it makes total sense. The Factory is honestly London's only real attraction IMHO. It has a mix of entertainment, offices, restaurants & a hotel makes total sense. It wouldn't be Hard Rock putting up the money. It would have private money & the Hard Rock branding. Either way, it's good news for the city & might attract even more people to the sight.

Shame the casino deal and hotel fell thru at Western Fair. That plus this Hard Rock Hotel would have been great news for the area. Maybe this will help push Sierra to redevelop the McCormick Factory property now.

Hard Rock Hotel Coming to london!!!!!!!

Prepare to rock hard, London – the Forest City is slated to become the new home of a Hard Rock Hotel.

The iconic brand has chosen London as the new site for a hotel, as part of its expansion plans across North America.

The new hotel, which would have 353 rooms, will be located at the site of the former Kellogg’s cereal plant in east London, now known as 100 Kellogg Lane.

The project, being led by the Dora Hotel Company and The Cribbage Group, will be completed in two phases. The first one will see the opening of 163 rooms for late 2022, with completion slated for 2025.

“Signing the agreement for the creation of Hard Rock Hotel London, Ontario is the beginning of what is sure to be an extraordinary partnership between The Dora Hotel Company, Hard Rock International, The Cribbage Group and the city of London,” Tim Dora, president of The Dora Hotel Company, said in a statement.

“We are excited to begin work on this property and bring to life the unparalleled energy of Hard Rock.”

The hotel will be built “embracing historical aspects of the site,” including the property’s courtyard.

The Hard Rock Hotel is the latest venture moving into the revamped Kellogg’s property, which for a century was a cereal factory but has been turned into a hub for entertainment in the city.
