Why aren't the towers identical between the parking and the residences? What's the difference? Also, is there anyway we could see pictures of the common areas of the buildings? just curious

it's probably my 3 decades worth of familiarity with them, and the fact that MC is my home, but i can honestly say that marina city doesn't feel like anything other than 100% pure raw chicago to me.

When I was a kid growing up on a farm in Colorado in the early 70's, I could sometimes hear a radio station through the static that came from a magical place called Marina City. The station was WCFL (this was back when AM radio ruled)...it was called "Super CFL", and it featured some of the greatest disc jockeys in America. The radio war that went on between the two 50,000 watt giants out of Chicago, WCFL and WLS, was legendary. The station was located on the top floor of what is now a hotel in Marina City. Through the 60's and 70's millions of kids over dozens of states were introduced to groups like the Beatles, the Stones, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and many others because of this powerhouse station. Unlike today, when local radio has limited reach and limited influence, top 40 stations of that era were very influential. I became a disc jockey because of the passion I heard on CFL, and for me, Marina City will always be a magical place architecturally and historically.

^^^ Great story. Were you picking up on a secondary broadcast of the radio station? I imagine there is no way you were hearing the actual signal coming from the antennae on Marina City at such a long distance.

No, I was listening to WCFL was live over the airwaves. 50,000 watt AM stations have the ability to travel thousands of miles at night. Sunlight kills radio waves...but at night they can travel great distances. 50,000 watt stations are rare though. Only a handful across the nation as that is the highest power allowed for AM stations.
