Sun tower, Vancouver

Dominion Building, Vancouver

Both were the tallest building(s) in the British Empire for a time.

Was never the tallest in the BE, but the Marine building in Vancouver is a stunning piece of Art Deco.

During my stay in Vancouver I got to talkin' with some locals. I mentioned how I wanted to go take pictures of the Shangri La. I was shocked at my friend's responses. En bref, they all hated the shangri la because it was "Too tall". because it "stuck out". Jesus, I hope that's not the general opinion...I just love that building.

I have never, nor do I think I ever will utter those words in regard to a building.

Hmm, I have never heard anyone I know in Vancouver say that, all of my friends love it! Were you hanging out with hipsters? because they tend to not like anything new / corporate (unless it is a company that makes clothing products or coffee they like, hehe.)

I agree Shangri-la's too tall (by about 5-10 stories). While it looks fine from coal harbour, it looks huge from English bay. Normal people (who aren't skyscraper/penis enthusiasts), especially those from BC, are generally opposed to building bigger.

Shangri-la is tall for Vancouver, but almost invisible at the same time. Certainly doesn't stand out very much with the sort of chameleon glass that so many buildings now use. Harbour Centre is as much an eye catcher after all these years, and it ain't that tall.

Well you see that is why I was perplexed. The reason the building is beautiful (aside from the clad) is the fact that it stands out in a sea of mediocre height. How can it be too tall by 5 stories? I don't understand that mentality. Too tall would of been a 300m skyscraper, like the CN tower is too tall for Toronto's skyline (or was back in '76). But the shangrila sticks out just enough for it to be noticed.

I've come to the conclusion that the Shangri-La is too tall by 1 foot, 5.3 inches.

Aren't you the one who complains about every highrise project in Vancouver, often calling them "too short?"

I honestly do not believe there is a single tower you like in Van.

Few towers are "too short" for me; I'm not a fanboy. If anything my usual complaints are "too tall", or more often, "too fat".

There's lots of towers I love despite their imperfections (including Shangri-la); those are the ones I don't comment on and instead post pics of in SSC canada
