South Hayward BART Station
The main park entrance is about a 30-minute walk from the station.

Pacifica
2012.09.03

Pacifica is a small town / suburb just south of San Francisco proper. The north end borders Daly City and isn’t anything spectacular, just more of the hilly, perpetually foggy suburbia that we tend to associate with Daly City. The southern end and portions along the coast, however, offer some of the best “beach town” atmosphere you’ll find in the core of the Bay Area, just a short BART and bus ride away from the city. With the rugged, picturesque coastline and an extensive, interconnected series of open space and parkland, I’ve enjoyed going here for urban hikes, from the beaches down by the water, ascending the coastal bluffs, and climbing up to the ridges that make up the northern extremities of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Pacifica is also a popular surf spot, and the weather is mostly pleasant this time of year, although the fog tends to come rolling in around 4:00 or 4:30 pm.

At Colma BART Station
It’s about 15-20 minutes on the bus to get to Pacifica.

Erosion is a huge problem on the bluffs… There’s news of building evacuations every year or so.

The contentious Sharp Park golf course… The wetlands adjacent to the park are home to endangered California red-legged frogs and San Francisco garter snakes, and environmental groups have been trying to close the park for some time now. The issues are complicated by the fact that the park itself is actually owned by the City and County of San Francisco, despite being well outside city limits.

These are the wetlands in question.
Sweeney Ridge is in the background… San Bruno and Millbrae are on the other side of the mountain.

Vanessa virginiensis (American painted lady)

Plantago coronopus (buckhorn plantain), just one of the many non-native species that have taken root.

The former limestone quarry site… There were proposals to develop the adjacent area as a new “downtown” for Pacifica, but they fell through as a result of opposition from environmentalists concerned about habitat loss for endangered species and the local community, which hasn’t come to a consensus as to the future of the site.

The state flower, Eschscholzia californica (California poppy)

While the new “downtown” at the quarry site probably won’t be happening anytime soon, the effective commercial center of southern Pacifica is Linda Mar, home to several strip-mall-type shopping centers in close proximity, at the top of the picture. And yes, that’s a Taco Bell built right on the beach.

Eriogonum latifolium (coast buckwheat)

Aster chilensis (coast aster)
