Huntsville, Ala., is now the most expensive airport with an average fare of $471. It was followed by Grand Rapids, Mich. ($403); Savannah, Ga. ($402); Washington Dulles ($383); and Houston Bush ($379).

The lowest fares were at Atlantic City ($185), followed by Long Beach ($216); Dallas Love ($223); Orlando ($228); and Fort Lauderdale ($229).

Hudson Alpha to add mile long greenway on it's campus both sides lined
with Biotech companies. in the rendering only the the two buildings at the bottom are built, this is the HQ of Hudson Alpha
Very impressive vision and design. This campus is located in Cummings Research Park.

Now, thanks to a commitment from Lonnie McMillian, president of the Alpha Foundation and a longtime Huntsville business leader, that attention is going out the window - literally.

McMillian, who is also co-chairman of the HudsonAlpha Institute board of directors, has donated $1.6 million toward developing "the grove" - an area of green space that runs the entire length of the nearly mile-long biotech campus.

"The grove has been thoughtfully designed to complement HudsonAlpha's collaborative model," McMillian said. "The institute incorporates the spirit of sky, earth, wood and fire.

"Now, we're taking that outdoors."

The campus' primary pedestrian pathway runs the length of the grove, between two parallel rows of buildings. There also will be areas for people to meet.

"Just as there are conference rooms on every floor of HudsonAlpha and there is the Atrium Cafe, where everybody meets, the grove will have that same sense of collaboration and sharing," McClain said.

As an example, McMillian said the maximum distance between buildings should be no more than 150 feet from one side of the grove to the other.

"At those distances, individuals can recognize a colleague who might enter the grove from the opposite side and then engage in conversation," he said.

Well this may indicate something big is in the works
"The City of Huntsville may spend $300,000 to reserve the right to buy a Limestone County farm where Volkswagen strongly considered building its first U.S. automotive plant.

At tonight's City Council meeting, Mayor Tommy Battle is expected to seek approval for a one-year option to purchase 1,500 acres from the Sewell Family Partnership"

Battle said two companies, which he declined to name, have looked at the Sewell property in the past year.

Under the proposed deal, the city's Industrial Development Board would option the Sewell tract for one year or possibly two. The $300,000 to hold the land would come from Huntsville's capital budget, which set aside $3.5 million this year for economic development projects.

The city would need to come up with about $30 million if it decides to purchase the site, Battle said.

W.F. Sanders, an Industrial Development Board member, said the city is "on the international map" and has to be able to accommodate large manufacturers that want to come here. "

the state still plans to make interchange improvements at I-565 and Greenbrier Rd.

VW is expected to buy 49.9 % stake in Porsche possibly next week.
Doubt Porsche will ever build in the US but Audi (another VW company)
probably will.

Why won't AirTran come to Huntsville? We'd appreciate flights to Atlanta, Orlando, Houston, and one of the DC Airports(preferably Reagan, but BWI would work too).

Come on AirTran, don't let Southwest hog all the LCC traffic from North Alabama by making us drive to either BHM or BNA.

AirTran will be more likely to begin service to HSV during the time frame of late 2010 and 2011 because by then the bulk of the BRAC transfers will have been relocated and they will provide a substantial boost to the passenger count at HSV - particularly on the routes to Washington D.C.

If you look at the HSV website (www.hsvairport.org) you will see that Washington National (DCA) is the #1 destination and Orlando (MCO) is #2. Just recently, AirTran negotiated with USAIR to get more gates at DCA so it appears that things are falling into place for AirTran to strongly consider service to HSV as they could offer service to both DCA and MCO as well as their ATL Hub. Today, in USA Today, there was an article stating that USAIr is reducing service and will only have flights to its hubs in Philadelphia and Charlotte - this would mean that USAIR will eliminate its HSV to DCA route and this would present an opportunity for AirTran to fill. Also, they might consider service to Baltimore (BWI) as that is the #4 Market with 37,000 passengers (HSV-MCO has 38,000) and AirTran has a mini-hub in Baltimore to its Northeastern destinations.

AirTran will not offer direct service to Houston as they presently only have connecting service through ATL.

AirTran could be a big improvement and a strong competitor as they only have full body jet service (717 and 737) whereas, with the exception of American's service to DFW, all HSV flights are on regional jets.

Great news!!

The Tennessee Valley Vipers are getting a makeover, literally. They will now be known as the Alabama Vipers and are moving from AFL2 semi-pro to AFL1 which is the biggest pro level that has a national televised contract with ESPN and NBC. Meaning, Huntsville will soon be seen on national tv across the globe!!!!! This will be Hunstville's first official pro franchise in the city's history. It will also be a huge promotional tool for popular places around town like Bridge Street, Space & Rocket Center and the new Propst Arena renovation where they will play their games.

Wikipedia is FAST!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alabama_Vipers

Click here to see the new logo. I can't wait to get more information on the new AF1 and find out what the TV contract will look like. If AF1 looks like the original Arena Football, we will be considered the "Green Bay" of AF1 given the size difference in our city and the other teams.

Don't get too excited yet. There seems to be 2 big indoor football leagues now, with some of the old af2 teams jumping ship and going to the indoor football league. I don't know if either league will get the type of tv deals that Arena League had before it was canned. We'll wait and see, but the fact that Huntsville moves up in class with the big boys is a good thing.

Zoning changes downtown

This a bit misleading the zoning is changing but officially downtown has included this area all along, downtowns borders are considered Governors Drive to the south, California to the east , Pratt to the north and Memorial Parkway to the west but now that area is expanding the boundaries as redevelopment moves along.
A proposal to significantly expand downtown Huntsville passed its first test Wednesday.

Members of the city's zoning committee had a favorable reaction to adding 182 acres to the downtown General Business C-3 zone. They forwarded the idea to the Planning Commission, which will hold a public hearing at 5 p.m. on Jan 26.

The zoning change would affect the northern fringe of downtown, including land around the Historic Huntsville Depot, city dog park and Interstate 565-Washington Street interchange -- areas now zoned for residential or industrial uses.

Assistant City Planning Director Marie Bostick said General Business C-3 zoning would make it easier to attract restaurants, theaters and other entertainment venues.

"We want to encourage things that are more 24-7 oriented," Bostick said, "so you have activity continuously."

It will be interesting to see how United and Delta respond(they already have nonstops to DC) and could it get JetBlue's attention.

I thought Delta had the old MD-88 that went between HSV and ATL?

You are correct. There is one MD-88 a day which flies between ATL and HSV. The rest of the flights in that market are RJ's and earlier this year, there wasn't even one MD-88 on that route. So it is uncertain if Delta will continue it.

I've always considered Governers a different area, which is the medical district.

Your friend is correct. I was actually going to post this on this list and haven't had the time.

My wife and I went there and ate before taking in a flick at Monaco. The BBQ sauce on the ribs is REAL spicy hot. So spicy it burns your lips and tongue. Some might like that but we don't like our BBQ sauce that way. They use the same sauce in their baked beans too, so it's the same way. The meat on the ribs seemed over cooked because the meat was dry.

I reordered my ribs dry, but I guess they don't know what that means because it still came out with sauce on it.

I ordered the steak fries as one of my side item because i was hungry. When you order steak fries at most places, they will give you a mountain of fries because how inexpensive they are. Not here, they arrived on a five inch plate.

For 2010 again
Project still planned
Scott McLain told WAFF 48 News, "I told Santa, 'All I want is a construction trailer and a fence.'"

It looks like McLain might get his wish. The developer of Constellation - a planned entertainment, residential, and office development project off Memorial Parkway - said there should be movement Wednesday toward a Generation Y-geared hotel after the development group building Spring Hill Suites got its financing approved.

"When people drive by they say, 'Aw, nothing's going on, the economy must have killed it,'" McClain said. "There is action on every piece of this property."

McLain said inquiries into office space is moving forward, but there are some challenges.

"Office development is based on need," he said. "Our economy is growing here in Huntsville, so we have people who want to do things. But you have to have to have the combination of want plus need plus ability to pay what it costs to build a new concrete building in 2010, which is a lot more than it did in 1989 when we built the last downtown building."

McLain said talks of food service are moving smoothly.

"Everybody wants the restaurants," he said. "Well, I'm working on those. I've got one that's said, 'Yes.' I've got another coming on [Jan.] 12."

As far as recruiting restaurants goes, McLain said he'd like to see something different: new to Huntsville, new to Alabama. But he's remaining tightlipped now.

While he won't reveal any names, the developer said he's in conversations with six different green grocers.

McLain said 2009 has been the hardest year for developers, but Huntsville's got major drawing points and a better economy than most that will help him recruit. So far he doesn't have a projected timeline for completion.

"I don't control that; my timeline is as soon as possible, but retailers are still confused," he said.

And he said it's the retailers that make those decisions.

The Constellation developer said he's got a lot elves - locally, regionally, and nationally - helping him recruit those retailers.

"I'm just hoping I can fill their stockings with commission as soon as possible," he said.
