Housing conditions in the EU27 in 2009
One person in six lives in a crowded household

In the EU27, housing conditions vary widely between member states. Differences can be observed both on the type of household as well as its condition. On average in the EU27, 42% of the population1 lived in an apartment in 2009, 34% in a detached house and 23% in a semidetached or row house2. In the EU27, 18% of the population lived in an overcrowded3 household, while 16% stated having problems with roof leaking or humidity, 7% thought their household was too dark, 4% had no interior toilets and 3% no bathtub or shower.

These information about housing conditions comes from a report4 from Eurostat, the office of statistics of the European Union.

Among member states, apartments are more common in Latvia, detached houses in Slovenia and row house in the Netherlands and UK.

Household type varies widely among member states: detached houses2 are the most common type of housing in twelve member states, apartments in ten and semidetached or row houses2 in five member states.

In 2009, more than half of the population lived in an apartment in Latvia (66%), in Estonia and Spain (65% each), in Lithuania (58%), in Greece (56%) also in Czech Republic , Germany and Italy (53% each), detached houses in Slovenia (69%), in Hungary (68%), in Romania (61%), in Denmark (58%) and in Sweden (51%) and semidetached or row house in the Netherlands and the UK (61% each) as well as Ireland (58%).

Between 1% of the population of Cyprus and 58% of Latvia's population lives in an overcrowded household.
