Well, I believe Houston doesn't have any zoning codes. Smart people, those Houstonians.

No solid plans yet, but the Railyard Condos that occupy two halves of two blocks just west of the convention center are being eyed for redevelopment. This says 1.8 million square feet is possible in two towers of up to 50-stories.

Railyard condo project in downtown Austin hits the market

Aug 03, 2018
By Shonda Novak, American-Statesman Staff

It’s a developer’s dream: Two unrestricted parcels in downtown Austin that could become a blank canvas on which to envision a large mixed-use project near both the Austin Convention Center and a commuter rail stop.

The dream could become a reality if a developer offers owners of the 112-unit Railyard condominiums a price they can’t refuse.

The Railyard was built in 1983 and spans two half city blocks at 201 E. 4th Street and 301 E. 4th Street. It is being put up for sale by the Railyard Condominium Owners Association in response to several unsolicited inquiries from developers.

Condo site next to Austin Convention Center for sale

Site has potential for hotel, offices, apartments

By Will Anderson – Managing Editor, Austin Business Journal

The owner is the Railyard Condominiums Owners Association; CBRE Group Inc. has the listing, according to the Austin American-Statesman. The site could support up to 1.8 million square feet of development and is not restricted by a Capitol view corridor, the newspaper reports. That means buildings higher than 50 stories may be expected.

Can't wait to see what's going to be built in that area. Hope some thought goes into what does so they can get maximum use of the land.

While density in West Campus is a very good thing. Let's pause a moment and mourn the passing of a small building by one of Texas' greatest home grown architects, O'Neil Ford.

I agree! No CVC and plenty of room, this could be something special.

That's a great building? It looks like a piece of garbage built in 1970 that could be found in countless suburbs of Texas.

Yeah. He was also the architect of the Tower of the Americas in San Antonio.

This one is pretty squarely in the "meh" pile for me, but go see some of his other buildings. He was of the Frank Lloyd Wright vein of architecture, dealing mostly with mid-century modern style architecture. His single family homes were pretty decent. Architects design beautiful buildings, budgets dictate their outcome.

Alternate McKalla Place proposals line up on eve of Austin's MLS stadium vote

By Daniel Salazar – Staff Writer, Austin Business Journal
Aug 7, 2018, 2:10pm CDT

Developers, architects and residents are making a final push to transform a North Austin site into something other than a professional soccer stadium as the city nears another critical decision on its professional sports future.

Five different groups responded to the city's call for alternate ideas on developing or purchasing McKalla Place, a 24-acre site south of The Domain. One group submitted two options for their proposal, bringing the total number of alternate plans to six. Only one plan would still feature a professional soccer stadium on the city-owned site.

100% Fantasy!

AND - Salazar is a well known hater of the idea of MLS moving to Austin. Cannot believe the ABJ has him on that beat. Poor choice, Mr. Pope!

I thought I'd bump this thread with some of the interesting news happening this week in Austin. Cross-posting from the Austin board.

The Republic - scuttlebutt has this growing from 586' to 708' without the addition of a spire.

-October 9th will have final plan to Airport Commission

Phase 1 Expansion 2027)
-21.7 Million Passengers, AO 287K, 48 Gates
-Future Terminal over the existing short term garage directly north of BJ Terminal
-Future island concourse but only about 20 gates. It'll be mostly symmetrical with a future western extension in the future. Catwalk from BJ terminal to new concourse will be about 80 feet high
-New Taxiway Delta
-New Terminal Curves
-New Airport Roadway Network
-New Central bag System
-New Apron, Taxiway and Taxilanes
-South Maintenance Ramp Rehab-Central Warehouse
-Consolidated Maintenance Facility
-New Support Facilities
-New Fuel Farm
-New Central Utility Plant

Phase 2 Expansion 2037)
-31.4 million passengers, AO 426K, Total Gates: 64
-Extend new island concourse and additional 12 gates west to match what we've seen in recent diagrams

Ultimate Expansion)
-Reroute 71 to expand airport footprint northward
-New Center Runway (Needed around 2045)

Terminal Curb front Concept
-NO MORE PEDESTRIANS CROSSWALKS with vehicles!
-3 Level curb way relocated north of new terminal building and south of new garages
-Top level for Departures
-Mid Level for Pedestrians walking
-Bottom Level for Arrivals
-4 lanes for private vehicles (2 for loading/unloading) on top and bottom level
-3 Lanes for commercial vehicles (including Lyft/Uber) on top and bottom level
-Getting to commercial vehicles would require people to go up a level from baggage claim, cross over passenger lanes and then down a level to commercial area
-Gap between two new garages could serve as a space for a future people mover from the lots
-Reduce the number decision points for vehicles

New Terminal Building
-Generally open design without support columns mixed in to muddy configurations. Makes it easier to move stuff around when needs and equipment changes.
-New Ticketing Area about the size of 2 football fields
-New Baggage Claim Area and consolidated baggage screening area which is improvement over current BJ setup.
-New Security area is big continuous rectangle
-Existing curb area between new terminal building and BJ becomes a plaza with concessions on elevated floor and a private secure roadway below.

The Republic - Height increased to 709' (45 stories). It will become Austin's tallest office tower and second tallest building (behind the proposed 848'/65-story "6 X Guadalupe" mixed-use tower).

Is there anyone who could do a mock up using the first picture in Golden Boots post with the block 185 tower and Guadalupe tower? Man Austin is really started to get its big boy boots on and I'm loving it.
