The cab came out of that in relatively good shape. Wouldn't it have more damage if there was structural steel in the window frames?

This is a great article for pointing out that market-based gentrification sometimes just doesn't do the job fast enough. There should be a law!

And so it begins (dramatic chipmunk).

The ugly face of gentrification.

"The nice thing is, it's changing. That's the good thing. The bad thing is, it's the mom-and-pop shops that are making a living here that are going to get nailed for higher rent. Where are they going to go?" Francis said.

Not to be glib but this is Hamilton. There are more than a couple decent locations where he and others could pop up: Barton Village; Ottawa St; Concession; King E or any number of other downtown streets adjacent to James.

It's tough out there and I'm sympathetic but this ain't NYC...yet.

Yeah, Hamilton has good loads of underused or unused commercial areas that moving is easy. Of course if you linger for too long hoping business will pick up to match rising rents you might be in trouble.

I've been hearing that even Ottawa Street is nearly full and rents are starting to slowly rise. There's always Barton and Kenilworth though, also walkable streets with great bones. I've already been noticing a few new businesses on Barton in the past 6 months. Nothing terribly fancy but it's an upgrade from empty stores and abandonments. In this town, everything starts from humble beginnings.

Yep, not to sound insensitive but I couldn't care less that this guy can't afford his rent. It sucks that he has to move but there's more than enough affordable storefronts out there.

As an artist though he probably depends a lot on the Art Crawl traffic. If he's no longer on James the people going into his location is going to crater.
