Is that a criticism on Lansdowne? Yes, it leaves something to be desired in the architecture department but it is the single best thing to happen to the Glebe in a long time. The concrete wasteland that was Lansdowne in years past was an embarrassment to our city and the vibrancy of the area has brought a new energy to Ottawa's most central primarily residential neighbourhood.

Minto set up a project website as part of the public consultation. The presentation to Planning Committee summarizes the design evolution very well.

There's nothing wrong with the MacDonald's itself - the parking lot next to it is the lame duck.

This project combined with the project across the street on the corner of Fifth/Bank should bring some nice additional density to that end of Bank. I don't really see what the issue is.

They did some solid improvements to try and appease the community. More than we can say for other developers.

Seven-storey redevelopment in Glebe approved

A seven-storey redevelopment of a Glebe property received council’s endorsement.

Minto Communities is building at 99 Fifth Ave. as an addition to the historic two-storey commercial strip along Bank Street. The new building would replace a two-storey addition and interior courtyard.

Current zoning only permits five storeys. City planners say the seven-storey plan is compatible with the community.

“Better than the original. Not good enough,” Chernushenko said, adding that he voted in favour of the application because he helped make it more tolerable for the community.

Coun. Jeff Leiper was the only one who voted against the application.

My understanding is that Chernushenko didn't lift a finger on this one because he opposed anything above 15m. The heavy lifting was left to Minto and the Glebe Community Association.

Do you have a comparable example?

To me, it looks like a typical commercial infill in an urban setting.

I agree this is an improvement although to be honest the original wasn't exactly terrible either.

I suppose one good thing about the well-organized NIMBYs in the Glebe are that they can pretty much force a project to have impeccable quality.

Just looking at the new renders again - has this proposal lost another storey? Looks like six rather than seven to me.

Minto secures financing for eight-storey Glebe development; construction to start 2019

One of Ottawa’s largest real estate firms says it now has cash in hand to proceed with a planned eight-storey condo building in the Glebe.

Minto Group announced Friday it had received a $30-million advance from its apartment REIT to redevelop its site at 99 Fifth Ave., dubbed Fifth + Bank. The 160-suite condo project, designed by Toronto’s TACT Architecture, will sit behind a retained two-storey retail-use building on Bank Street and feature a 118-spot underground parking garage.

The site currently features a building with an indoor courtyard and several businesses spread out over two floors, including the Arrow and Loon Pub as well as a dentist, hair salon and eye-care professional.

Minto expects to begin construction on the Glebe site in 2019.

Elsewhere, the Minto REIT announced it had acquired two residential properties in Calgary at a total cost of $63.8 million.

I just got word from Minto that this will be a rental building rather than a condo. I am surprised and disappointed.
