I agree. Keep it simple and straight forward.

BTW, don't worry, I was in midterm hell last week and am now on reading week I understand your pain.

The only thing is that Edmonton is about to embark on another major expansion that will most likely dwarf Winnipeg's expansion size, but whatever. I"m still happy with Winnipeg's airport expansion.

i think 30 000 m is wrong anyways actually.

one of the great things about the design is the ease of expandability...just keep extending the curve....the architect from pellis office talked about that concept in the public presentation.

Those numbers can't be right. Edmonton's (well, Leduc's) airport seems far, far larger than Winnipeg's. Or is that the new terminal? Even still, no way is the Ottawa airport twice as large as Edmonton's.

Brings up an interesting point, though - do you have numbers for the sq ft'age of all the major airports in Canada? Can we fit them all into Pearson?

Because it's always been Stephenson Field, and probably will be again.

Some more details about the airport - from a construction news service (Daily Commercial News and Construction Record)

February 23, 2007

New Winnipeg airport terminal set to start construction soon

WINNIPEG

Construction of the new air terminal building at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is set to begin early this spring.

The Winnipeg Airport Authority awarded the bid to the joint venture of EllisDon Construction/Man-Shield Construction. It will be responsible for construction of the new terminal building, upper level roadway, central utility building and utility tunnel. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2009.

In the past year, airport redevelopment was responsible for nearly 375,000 person-hours of onsite work, primarily on groundside infrastructure and parkade construction.

The airport redevelopment program includes a construction commitment of $585 million, consisting of a new terminal design emphasizing light, transparency and open space providing connectivity to the landscape and visual activity of the airport. The openness provides visual clues for intuitive wayfinding and significantly improves the customer’s ability to move from one location to another in a convenient fashion.

Wider passenger circulation corridors, larger boarding lounges and lobby spaces provides more seating and queuing space, improving passenger comfort and reducing peak time congestion.

Plans are underway to add an exciting range of concession services, including restaurants and retail shopping.

A common-use baggage handling system improves efficiency for carriers, accuracy and convenience for passengers and complies with security requirements for the safety of all.

All passengers requiring pre-board screening will be guided through a central location, rather than seeking out separate entrances for domestic and transborder flights.

Customs facilities will be expanded in order to improve passenger convenience and reduce processing waiting time.

The evolution of security demands expanded processing capabilities to accommodate new regulations and procedures, at the same time minimizing the impact of processing time on airlines and passengers.

Customers of all abilities will be able to use future airport services with a high level of accessibility.

I believe the first expansion phase is more likely to be eastward, expanding the transborder area, rather than to the west (as you have - umm - sketched?).

They wil have to install those moving sidewalks. ... but still that is nothing compared to some of the big US airports. You can walk for miles in O'Hare and JFK.

I was wondering if anyone would catch that one. The lone darker building to the side is the business centre ... and if you look close you can see me on the top floor smiling.

I remember as a kid that they used to have those personal TV sets you get to sit in and watch. Good times.
